For IT shops, those laptop battery recalls are costly
- IT TOPICS:Hardware, Mobile & Wireless
Analyst Jack Gold points out that big IT organizations -- with thousands of laptops deployed -- face a lot of uncompensated costs in dealing with the Sony laptop battery recalls. Someone (guess who) has to replace those batteries, not just at company HQ but also in various far-flung satellite offices, too. Gold estimates the cost at $102 per laptop at HQ... or $148 per laptop out in the field (think of the FedEx costs!).
"While the cost of the replacement batteries is being borne by Sony and the various notebook manufacturers,
there remains a high cost burden on companies who must actually do the work of replacing the battery
in each device."
Gold pegs the (un-reimbursed) cost for a typical enterprise notebook installation at $625,000. And he says enterprises should try to recoup some of those costs from their vendors!
"Companies need to understand that the cost of any product recall is not free to them, and that substantial unexpected and
un-reimbursed expenses will be accrued. This recall will cost enterprises a great deal, and companies should endeavor to recover some of those costs from their vendors.”
All told, Gold estimates that the total costs for enterprise IT shops will be $372 million "for the approximately 3 million enterprise-deployed notebooks covered under the battery recall."
