Security Matters

Is Zune doomed before it even launches?

You know what, between insane DRM issues , a poor-to-middlin interface and software that sucks , I don't see any reason that I'd even think about buying a Zune.  The buzz on the blogosphere is almost universally negative and gives me no confidence that the Zune will make it until the middle of next year, let alone be aiPod killer.

Maybe I'm reading too much into the blogosphere and when average joes get their hands on the Zune, they'll love it.  At least until they go to install the software and start buying music, that is.  Personally, I've made a decision that I'm not allowing Microsoft to escape the computers in my house; I don't have an X-box, the only system I have Windows Media edition is on is my laptop and I'm not going to buy a product that may be crippled when Microsoft decides to shut down the music store.  Maybe my wife will get me an iPod for Christmas, because even though I'm not much happier with iTunes and their DRM, at least the iPod is cool.

Whose idea was it to make the Zune brown anyways?  Maybe Microsoft should call David Platt for some advice.

What People Are Saying

I agree and must say, if you

I agree and must say, if you can't tell the difference in design, features and quality between a zune and the iPod-you should definitely get a zune. Afterwards, drive home in your Yugo, take off your leisure suit, put up your feet on that crack-a-lacken Naugahyde couch and crank up those bontempi slow-jams.

Yes, get yourself a zune-I insist.

Hmm... I never had a problem

Hmm... I never had a problem with my iPods. Then again, I paid for none of them (won them at SANS) and never loaded anything other than my own (legal) MP3's and podcasts. The Zune appears to be limited to only songs from the Zune store (part of its shortcomings).

Alan, you _can_ put Linux on the iPod, though I don't recommend it.

To tell the truth, I get the most milage out of buring the podcasts to CD and listening to them on the way to work (one hour one way).

With all the other flaws in

With all the other flaws in it's design? I doubt it. For me, Microsoft isn't really nearly as much of an issue as the DRM is. I dislike Apple's DRM nearly as much as I do Microsoft's. Plus, I've already got an iRiver, I don't really need a iPod or a Zune.
