Pac Man fever: Venerable arcade game turns 25!

The Washington Post has a story today that at first brought a smile, and then made me cringe: Pac Man is 25 years old.

The smile -- well, who couldn't crack a smile, remembering the desperate dash to scoop up dots and avoid blue ghosts, while listening to the "wokka wokka wokka" sound effects?

And the cringe? Well, when a favorite video game from my childhood turns a quarter-century old, I start to realize how old I am, and how much time I wasted in my youth!

If you want to waste a few minutes on Pac Man nostalgia, or you're under 30, and are wondering what all the fuss is about, then check out the official Pac Man cafe. Folks with a bit more time on their hands can see the range of Pac Man emulators available for various systems.

Wokka on!

Gads. I was writing software

Gads. I was writing software in 360 assembler long before personal computers were invented. You all reminiscing about experiences on Commodores and Amigas truly make me feel old!

My C64 with a blue screen

My C64 with a blue screen and a slowly data-recorder. A trip down memory lane.

I tried programming on

I tried programming on C64
then on Amiga500. We were the Kings in the 80th. In the beginning of the 90th we had 1MB Ram for over 200$ and a harddisk with 5MB. Win3.11 was too great for it, so we spend our money for a 10MB Harddisk ... Yes, we had a lot of fun !!!

When I started programming

When I started programming on a commodore, this thing only had 32 kb. Nowadays even vacuum cleaners have more. But it was always fun!

My wakeup call was the first

My wakeup call was the first 1Ghz CPU's. When I started programming, they only ran at 1Mhz! An increase of 1000 fold in 20 years. Where will it be in another 20 years I wonder?

Blue Ghosts

You said "scoop up dots and avoid blue ghosts", but in fact, you wanted to chase after the ghosts when they were blue, as that was their vulnerable, edible state. Naturally, I've just dated myself, but thanks for the time-warp.
