Computing From the Front Lines

Retrospect still alive

Thankfully, according to Dantz co-founder: Retrospect's demise greatly exaggerated, the Retrospect backup software is still alive.

I have to admit, I have been worried. I've been an enthusiastic Retrospect user for over 13 years now, as it's one of the few networked backup solutions for Macs, and a few years ago was cross platform. There are plenty of solutions that back up Macs, but very few that allow the backup server to be a Mac. If you're a Mac only shop, Retrospect will probably be the application you choose.

As to Retrospect being cancelled, since the acquisition by EMC, updates don't feel as regular as before, and it seems a long time since the 6.5 update, which at the moment is still not a Universal application. Although it works fine, I'd prefer the stability and speed of an Intel native version. There is also a significant difference between the interface one the Macs and Windows, and certain features (multiple simultaneous backups) are not currently supported in the Mac version.

Now we know they are still alive, we know there should be long to wait before the next version.

What People Are Saying

Yeah. Retrospect is so

Yeah. Retrospect is so over. Their current software is just plain pitiful. A few Number crunchers at EMC saw the Mac marketshare and the amount of developers needed to keep Retrospect alive. They update it very infrequently (like for Tiger or for Intel) just to keep it alive (although each successive iteration gets more and more unreliable).

I've happily switched over to BRU and am not looking back. BRU is much simpler and just works. I think until there is a good front end for an RSync type of client or automated Internet offiste backups BRU will do me.

EMC abandoned Retrospect long ago. ITs time the Mac community did as well.

Unfortunately Retrospect for

Unfortunately Retrospect for newer Macs is absent in terms of drivers for DVD-Rs; I too have been a loyal Retrospect user forever, but since my new MacBokPro Core Duo with its built-in Matshita UJ-85J DVD is not supported (even with the latest 6.1.126 drivers) and will not manually configure (write tests fail), I must conclude that an alternative solution is necessary.

In my opinion Retrospect should have new drivers out prior to Apple shipping new machines; anything less is not providing adequate support.

What are we supposed to do in the interim - not back up ?

EMC sucks big time.

Try working at EMC. It's

Try working at EMC. It's one of the worst places you could work at. Racism, gender bias, favoritism. Much more but I don't have the space to list it all. Third shift Apex, N.C. STINKS!
