Most useful Vista feature

David Pogue, author of Windows Vista: The Missing Manual, says (in this podcast interview) that the new feature in Vista that people will use the most is the new instant search on the Start Menu, see the screen shot.

Scot Finnie and Preston Gralla were also impressed by Vista's Search Features, but were less impressed by the variety and inconsistency between them. There's Start --> Search, which shouldn't (but will) be confused with, the Search box that's right on the Start menu, and then there's also Advanced Search. And the results are not always the same in the normal and the advanced versions.  Another complaint they have is that indexing speeds up the searching, but not everything is indexed.

My guess is that Pogue is right about people using the box on the Search menu, but if there's better functionality elsewhere, why did MS bury it?

Pogue also thinks the days of runaway viruses are behind us. Did he drink the MS Koolaid or will all those security features on all of those Windows machines really make a difference? I think he's probably being a little naive ... cough understatement cough ... but if that were true, I'd elect the new security features the most useful.

What People Are Saying

I think you have to analyze

I think you have to analyze it case by case scenario, compare the growth of Windows as a operating system over the past 15-20 years. I think the search tool is probably long overdue but it could be seen as the most useful tool out of the box on the computer. Also, just the fact that Google (grrrr) succeeded over Yahoo tells you the quality and usefulness of the search tool.

Its always like a broken

Its always like a broken record when it comes to picking apart any advancement. Once a person uses something for awhile they end up liking it or waiting for the next best thing. If you look back 10-15 years ago one goes, WOW and now at present, pick pick pick and in a few months WOW computers and related has come a long way! Its a computer for Gods sake! Get over it! Its not real life, its a toy that made it to your work place!

I have to agree. It is a

I have to agree. It is a tool, and nothing more. I can remember when a computer appeared at a business, all of the workers would run a contest for a name for it. Some of that nonsense is still around. I have gone to Vista, and while I wonder if it is worth the price, I am satisfied with it. You have to get used to the changes, and I suppose I will very soon.
