Virtualization Forum: Utilities will pay data centers to virtualize

At IDC's Virtualization Forum this morning, PG&E announced that it has formed a coalition with major utilities across the country to expand its program that pays data centers to consolidate servers through virtualization. PG&E's own program, launched last fall, pays between $150 and $300 per server removed from service, according to Mark Branfitt, supervisor of PG&E's Customer Energy Efficiency Program. "A core group of utilities ... will share our program designs, not just around virtualization but all of the things we’re doing in the energy space," he said.

PG&E also plans to take the program to the Consortium for Energy Efficiency, which has 85 utilities as members. "We will work through CEE to make this a nationwide effort," Branfitt said.

Details of the program should be available on the PG&E News page later today.
