U.S. senator: It's time to ban Wikipedia in schools, libraries

Here's the newest from Sen. Ted Stevens, the man who described the Internet as a series of tubes: It's time for the federal government to ban access to Wikipedia, MySpace, and social networking sites from schools and libraries.

Early in January, Stevens introduced Senate bill 49, which among other things, would require that any school or library that gets federal Internet subsidies would have to block access to interactive Web sites, including social networking sites, and possibly blogs as well. It appears that the definition of those sites is so vague that it could include sites such as Wikipedia, according to commentators. It would certainly ban MySpace.

The bill is, in part, a rehash of a similar bill introduced last year, the Deleting Online Predators Act, also called DOPA. That bill passed the house, but got bogged down in the Senate.

Many people are calling this year's bill "Son of DOPA" because of its similarity to last year's bill.

There are so many things wrong with this bill, it's hard to count them all. But its greatest irony would be banning Wikipedia -- perhaps the most widely used reference resource in the world -- from libraries and schools. I have plenty of problems with Wikipedia, including how easily it can be manipulated, and the way that student rely on it far too heavily. But ban an educational resource merely because it's interactive? If true, it's bizarre beyond comprehension.

It's easy to characterize Stevens as little more than a buffoon. He's certainly a buffoon, but he's a dangerous one. A law like his passed the House of Representatives last year. We're coming up to a presidential election, which always unleashes a kind of madness among candidates, especially when it concerns anything to do with children. So don't count this law out.

The main thing I do not like

The main thing I do not like about the banning of websites is that whenever I RESEARCH things for video games for my photography assignments and/or essays, or even to research about why schools should/shouldnt (mainly shouldnet) ban websites... most of the sites are banned. =/ I mean, you should attack the individuals and ban their usage of the computers, not the entire community.

Blocking Wikipedia violates The Freedom of Information Act

Should we block social sites like MySpace and eBlog? No, it violates our freedom of speech. Block Wikipedia? Maybe. Unless administrators have the courage to delete the photos of men's private parts otherwise it's a violation of The Freedom of Information Act. We need Congress for renewal of legistlation for freedom of information.

I agree that they should

I agree that they should delete social sites like gaming sites. Because they shouldn't be on there in the first place. They are blocked for a reason.

Insane!

It's crazy how restrictive these website blockers at schools are. I tried to get on funbrain.com and it was blocked because of 'Educational Games for Kids'. Shouldn't those types of websites be ENCOURAGED in schools? Don't get me started on Wikipedia--that was blocked a long time ago, for 'Reference'.
We never use computers in school anymore because every time the teacher tells us to go on a certain website for a lesson, it's blocked for some stupid reason. So even the teachers hate the new blockers, but nobody at our school can do anything about it.

I agree, it is ludicrous for them to ban wikipedia, sure it has its faults, but it can be used for main research.

I think the idea to ban

I think the idea to ban social networking websites is absolutely ridiculous. Even the hours that I spend at work sometimes go by with mostly work-related conversations with others.
