To Tell the Truth

A USB flash drive with a speaker

While I've seen just about everything when it comes to what you can shove into your USB port, this little device from eNecessities caught my eyes and ears. The Sound Drive is a 4-inch by 1-inch flash drive that can play WAV, AIFF, or MP3 sound clips. The Sound Drive isn't a mini-music player (as I'd hoped) but more of an advertising gimmick that emits a 10 to 20 second branding message or short audible commercial when plugged into your USB port.

Imagine, for instance, you plug in the drive to hear you've just won a sweepstakes: “Call 1-800-you-win1 to claim your prize.”

As eNecessities puts is, "10 out of a thousand Sound Drives can have a loaded message saying 'You Win', the remaining can have a message saying 'Thank you for playing.'"

While I don't think I'll be sending away for one anytime soon -- there's a 250 piece minimum -- perhaps we're turning a corner in the USB drive world, where instead of downloading an audible book, you simply plug in your USB drive and away you go, or if you're a reporter, press releases can come as audible presentations ... then again, let's hope not.
