Sony SXRD HDTV: "Yellow stain" woes

I've previously written about the Sony SXRD HDTV sets and my experiences with them here and here.

Unfortunately, while I still like the sets and think that the technology is the best out there dollar for dollar for large screen TVs (50" and up), I have recently run into a problem with my set.

My set developed what is being called elsewhere as the "yellow stain" issue. Basically, something goes wrong with the display engine (probably in the SXRD chips themselves) that makes the TV start to put a yellow tinge to the display, most notably in the upper right hand corner of the screen. The longer the TV is on, particularly when displaying static images, the worse it gets. The problem goes away after the set is turned off for a few hours, but then comes back again after the SXRD HDTV has been on for a little while.

If you display a static image for 30 minutes or so, such as the main menu of the Xbox 360, the problem will show up when you switch to watch something else. Again, the problem mainly manifests itself on the upper right hand of the screen, but you will start to see the "yellow stains" elsewhere as well.

Another good example? Play a game such as Need For Speed: Carbon on your SXRD set for 30 minutes or more and when you switch to watch something else, you will continue to see a yellow stain in the shape of the Heads Up Display (HUD) used for the cars in the game.

Now, not all SXRD sets have this issue, but apparently enough do that there is a class action lawsuit against Sony over the issue.

Anyhow, today I had a repair person out to replace the display engine for my 50" XBR SXRD unit, a process which took around 3 hours or so. I was lucky that it happened while the unit was under warranty.

Then again, since the repair does not extend my warranty, even for the replacement part, I may be out of luck if the issue happens again in 9 months time.

What's odd to me is that none of the large screen manufacturers that I know of are offering anything other than a 1 year warranty standard on their sets. Sony is no different in this regard. Yeah, sure you can buy an extended warranty, but when you are already spending several thousand dollars on a TV, it's eggregious to have to spend even more for what should be a standard item for a solid state TV.

Doesn't it strike anyone as odd that old CRT sets typically had a 3 year (or longer) warranty, but these new sets that should have lower failure rates (except for perhaps the bulbs in rear-projection units) than older sets have just 1 year?

Any way you toss it, based on the comments of the repair person who fixed my set, Sony does indeed have a PR problem on their hands (poor Sony, this is what PR problem number n+1 for them in the last year or so) in regards to the relatively high failure rate of what should be one of their biggest hit products.

But as I said at the opening of this article, I still see no other technology that compares to SXRD (when it's working at least). DLP is half baked as long as they are only using one display element and JVC's LCoS variety isn't nearly as sharp as SXRD, oh and all the other large screen offerings are quite a bit more expensive than the SXRD units as well.

I just hope that Sony does good for all the customers out there that are having the "yellow stain" issue with their SXRD sets. In particular, they should fix for free even those sets that have the problem beyond their warranty period.

I'm also wondering if anyone with a newer generation SXRD unit has run into this issue or whether Sony was able to resolve whatever the problem was with their manufacturing process.

What People Are Saying

i bought a sony sxrd about 2

i bought a sony sxrd about 2 years ago and the whole screen has a green tint

anyone else have this issue - who do you call to get it fixed?

does sony cover it?

Yellow Stain

Yes, I also have a BIG yellow stain right in the center and sides of my TV. Mine is the new version of the KDS-50A2000 which ends in 2020. The only difference is the cabinet is black unstead of silver. I bought it in june 2007 and before it was a year old it developed the stain. Called for service and a sony repairman just replaced the lamp and the problem looks like it hid itself for a while but now it came back and is now worse. Wonder if SONY will do something about this issue.

Does anyone know how much

Does anyone know how much the optical block part cost, and is it difficult to install if you have a good background in fixing mechanical and electrical items? Thanks for any info or help.

I purchased a Sony

I purchased a Sony KDS-R50XBR1 from Circuit City 12/04/05 for $3,549.00. It is used 1 or 2hrs a day.The original lamp is still working. However now I'm getting the green/yellow cast all over the screen. Do you know if the optical block is still covered under the extended mandated warranty ? Also what telephone number would I call to address this issue.Any info would be greatly appreciated. Thanks in advance.

KDSR50XBR1

I purchased the same tv around the same time you did also at circuit city. I called sony and they offered me three options. First option was a 52xbr9 for $1325 the 2nd option was a Kdl52ve5 for $900 and then a Kdl46ve5 for $550. These were the only options they offered to me.

60" sony

Sorry to tell you that your optical block is no longer covered even under the lawsuit they only cover them till July. You can call 1-800-222-7669. basically they're going to offer you a 48 inch TV at a discount $1000 are a 50 inch TV at discount $1000 none of these TVs are comparable to the one that you have sorry. I just hope you have better luck with the optical block than I have I'm still waiting today for the tech to show up from Qualxscrv 4 time Sony's recommended service. they been out three times with no luck.

KDSR60xb1

Please understand that I love this TV from Sony. servers as a whole other matter. you see we had to pay for the light engine for the class-action suit has ended. so we called Sony he arranged for us to buy a new part $750 they have now installl two of them and they are both bad??? technician says there's nothing that he can do Sony does not make these parts any longer they contract them out. what to do? you see Sony has offered us a 52 inch TV but we have a 60 inch .our TV cost was $5000 and they want us to pay $1000 for the inferior LCD TV?

Green/Yellow Tinged picture

I bought the KDS-50A2020 Tv about 2 years ago on lcttv.com and a 5 year warranty. It has the yellow/green tinted picture. The extended warranty company went out of business. Sony was not very helpful.. gave me numbers to authorized users but after reading these threads called them back and asked to see if there was a recall. They said we did qualify for a new optical block. Will see what this gets us.. but the picture on the TV is unbearable to watch for the money we paid.

Nobody seems to have a positive review on any of the TV repairs companies they provided. So hopefully they fix it with the block...

Same Problem

I spoke to Sony and agreed to pay for the troubleshooting of the set. They told me that it was not covered in the settlement either. They did say after persistence that the Block was covered for 2 years and they would see what the could do to help me if that was the problem and I said that I hoped that I wouldn't have to get my attorney involved. I told them that a Sony TV sould last more that 2 years and that a documented problem should be addressed. Well see. I escalateded it to the customer relations department.

green Haze Sony A2020

I'm having the same problem with my A2020 set and sony is telling me that the class action suit only covered the A2000. I was also sent to a escaleted dept. but all they offered was a discount on a new set. Did you get any results? I'm not sure why the A2020 was not included in the suit when it clearly has the same problem. Please let me know if you have gotten yours replaced.
