Sony SXRD HDTV: Careful when replacing the lamp

As I blogged yesterday, I had to get my Sony SXRD HDTV fixed because it caught the "yellow stain" bug.

I learned something interesting about the design of these particular HDTVs from the repair person.

There are two microswitches that the TV uses to detect that there is a lamp and that the lamp door has been properly closed.

Problem with the design is that both of these microswitches are very fragile and can be damaged pretty easily.

So keep this in mind when replacing the lamp on your SXRD set. Be very careful when taking the lamp door off, when taking out the old bulb and inserting the new one and when putting the lamp door back on.

Otherwise your $250 replacement of your SXRD lamp could turn out to be a bit more expensive.

Sony 60 inch SXRD Bulb replacement

Can anyone tell me is there a good site with pictures on changing the bulb for my Sony 60 inch SXRD? I can't seem to find my manual and my bulb just went out. I see by all these post that it can be tricky. Any help on sites would be appreciated.

Where is this white switch?

I am having a problem replacing my lamp in my KDS50A200. The first time I replaced the lamp (about a year ago), I had no issues. This time, not soo good!

I am looking at the door itself and I don't see a white switch. Am I missing something?

Thanks!

I wish I had read this

I wish I had read this before I became a jack of all trades and replaced my own lamp without being completely informed.

Now I've had to pay the repairman $65.00 to come diagnose the problem. $69.00 for a new lamp door switch (the size of a fingernail) and whatever he will charge for labour. Be very careful when you replace the door back on, put the left side in first as if it were the hinges on a door and the door was wide open, then close the door gently. It should slide into place and you can close it - tightening the screw. If you get any resistance, start over and don't force it by any means. The switch and even the door have some very fragile parts.

The switch is white in color and is no more than the size of the white of your pinky fingernail.

Heed my words and mistake!

work around for the lamp door

I did break the lamp door switch during my replacement. I found another solution if you happen to break the sensor. While not recommended, you can short the white and gray wire that lead to the door switch. You will need to remove the back housing to get to it. Just be sure no one removes the lamp door while the tv is on with a lamp in it as it could be harmful.

i was wondering about your

i was wondering about your comment on the lamp door for the Sony TV. Do you connect the white and gray wires to eachother or just cut them ?

I have just puchased a new

I have just puchased a new lamp but indicators still flash, how did you know you broke the door switch? My unit when turned on flashes green for 90secs then the lamp indicator flashed continuously. Help.

Have had my set since early

Have had my set since early '06 and the bulb just went a few days ago. Easy replace with on line bulb only purchase for about $99. Just make sure you save the screws and don't handle the bulb with bare fingers when re-using the housing. Use a cloth, as the skin oils will cause hotspots and burn it out prematurely.

Great TV

Looking over these replies I wonder if some owners that replaced their bulbs in only a year or two are aware that leaving the TV in its factory preset settings, especially 'vivid' mode decreased the life of the bulb dramatically. I use the custom mode and adjusted the settings to get a good picture and have yet to replace the bulb after 3+ years. The optical block was replaced last year, free of charge and with little hassle. Sony was breaking new ground with this TV, so I don't begrudge some of the problems it has had. Still a loyal Sony customer!
