Kodak printer sellout: Are consumers voting for lower ink prices?

In yesterday's blog I lamented the fact that my local Staples no longer sells HP-compatible ink and toner cartridges, and that the branded products cost much more. HP's move to maximize profits by limiting consumer choice could play into the hands of Kodak, a new player in the ink jet printer market that's offering low-cost consumables as a way to compete against the entrenched players.

If you're mad as hell and don't want to pay high prices for ink anymore, you may be responsive to Kodak's new line of EasyShare printers. Kodak offers this bargain: you pay a bit more for the printer. In return, it will sell you the consumables for 50% less than those from HP and other established players (a 5-color cartridge is just $14.99; a black cartridge $9.99).

Kodak has turned the current business model on its head. While HP, Lexmark and others virtually give away the "razor" to sell you the blades, Kodak expects to make a margin on the hardware. In return it will provide cheaper ink. In the long run the total cost of ownership should pay off. Kodak says users who buy Kodak paper in quantity and use its consumables can print 4 x 6 photos for about 10 cents each - about 1/3 the cost of competing printers and about half the cost of prints at your local Target or Wal Mart.

When Kodak first announced the products last month, analysts commenting in a Wall Street Journal story were divided on its prospects (Kodak's Strategy For First Printer -- Cheaper Cartridges, available to WSJ online subscribers only). While some said Kodak's consumer-friendly move would shake up the industry, others said only those customers that print lots of color pictures were likely to buy Kodak's new products.

In a posting at The Utility Belt blog last month (Kodak printers target the heart of HP's profit), the author previewed the printers and came away impressed. His summary: "HP should worry."

It's too early to say for sure, but judging by the initial response, Kodak may have hit a nerve with buyers. The product line launched this month exclusively with Best Buy. A check of the Best Buy Web site this morning showed that Kodak's $149 low-end model, the EasyShare 5100 All-in-One Photo Printer/Copier/Scanner, was already sold out.

But will the new printer line from Kodak perform as well as products from HP and its established rivals? The 5100 supposedly creates color prints at 22 pages per minute and can generate a 4" x 6" photo print in 28 seconds. I haven't seen one yet. Perhaps readers could weigh in. Would you buy a Kodak?

[NOTE: After posting this blog I went on to compare The EasyShare against an HP printer to see which was cheaper to run. To find out the results, read the review Ink Wars: Kodak vs. HP in the ink jet consumables battle].

What People Are Saying

I owned a Kodak Aio esp 3

I owned a Kodak Aio esp 3 for 2 days. Printer looked really nice on my desk, but I never got to use it because the software would not install. For the first day, I thought it was me, just missing something, so i just kept trying to install. Nothing, it kept telling me that installation was interrupted before it could finish and to try again later. There was no one to LIve Chat with even tho it says available 24/7, so I emailed Kodak. They sent me instuctions on what to do. They didnt work, so finally I was able to get someone on live chat, what they told me to do didnt work either. So I called, they gave me same steps live chat person did, I told them that, they said do it over and over until it installs. I asked how many times do i do this before i give up, person got offended. I just hung up, returned the printer. Apparently, I wasnt the only one with this problem. Lots of people asking on other websites. It used to be easy, plug the damn thing in. I bought the printer yes, for the ink price, I had a Brother, everytime I bought ink it was like buying the printer all over again it is so expensive & it constantly needed to have printer heads cleaned which sucked up most of my ink. Now I dont know what to get.

Kodak

the esp 5 printer worked for 3 months and stoped working good luck trying to get support in the usa no one could help me when I called eastman kodak in new york. This is the forth printer they replaced for me And when you do get someone on the line they want your cc number so you can pay for shipping to send you a replacement printer.

Kodak ESP9....JUNK!!!!

The Kodak ESP9 All in one printer is junk! I purchased this printer online directly through Kodak, as at the time, they were not available in stores. I have had this printer for 2 weeks and am amazed that I have allowed it to remain on my desk and not thrown out a window! This printer only prints when it wants to...do NOT ask it to print, as it will hiss and spit at you. I DO NOT recommend this product to anyone who would like to actually print their documents, make a copy, or, heaven forbid, send a fax. Please, please, please, stay away from these little devils, they're cute and have really neat lights...oooooh....but that's IT!

Kodak ESP-3 Printer

I don't know what everyone on here is complainng about. My ESP-3 printer works just fine. I can print anything on it just as well as I did on my old Lexmark printer. It is not user friendly at first, but with perserverance it is relatively easy to master. I would feel confident in recommending a Kodak printer.
Are you sure some of you negative posters on here don't work for the competition?

Print Heads are crap... No Kodak again

I've owned a Kodak printer for less than a year and it's been a nightmare. Print heads clog up after less than 2 cartridges, get more, they do the same thing..

Their product is total crapola.. Don't even think about getting one, it'll cost you more in the long run, I promise!!

I agree, total POS.

I agree, total POS.

someone agrees

Crapola is right ! Ive had 2 in less then 6 months the first printer I returned got a replacement... factory default? or so I thought. printed once with the new one, same thing happened I am so mad I could spit.. Kodak did send me a new printer head but I will wager the same thing will happen.

ESP 3

WTF!
I just bought two Kodak printers because of their ads for cheap ink. How misleading if you don't get to actually use all the ink in the cartridge. So far, after 2 weeks, neither printer has printed out more than a total of 10 quality pages. They'll print black but no color; color but no black; or noththing at all. And it tells me I've used quantities of ink. I haven't even tried scanning or copying. Frankly, neither of these brand new printers works. I just can't believe that Kodak would would put their name to a product like this. Its not like they're a small noname company. I expected, yes a cheap, but a quality product; or at least one that worked out of the box!! Considering the the common thread to all your problems, I'll be returning both of them this weekend.

ESP-7 printers...CRAP

3 weeks ago, we purchase a ESP7 printer, after 10 pages it jammed, and damaged the printer head. I spoke to Kodak tech support and they promised to send a new printer head, but it would take 5 days. I exchanged the printer at the local store, since I had a large quanity of printing that needed to be done in 2 days. We finished the printing and I was impressed with the amount of printing I got out of the cartridges. Put now it wont recognize paper edges.
After 4 hours speaking to India, they said if I give them my credit card # they would send me a new one, and credit my account when they recieve the broken one. I was never able to speak to a supervisor. When I told "LENA" that was unacceptable, she said there was nothing else they could do for me. Since it been over 14 days I can only exchange the printer. I will exchange, but I will be sending a letter to CEO of Kodak, and anybody else. I am tired of dealing with this. I will not be purchasing another Kodak product if this is how I will be treated.

I owned the Cannon mp620 and

I owned the Cannon mp620 and Kodak esp 3 which sell about the same price around $100 at walmart. The prints on the Cannon and the software are much better then Kodak. When I compared color prints I notice Cannon is much better. Kodak prints are darker and there is less contrast vs Cannon. The Kodak printer itself does feel like it is built more cheaply then the Cannon but overall I kept my Kodak and returned my Cannon printer. With all the frills it came down to cost. When it was time to replace all the ink tanks, $70 for Cannon vs $25 for Kodak. I don't need the best quality prints because I can get photos done at walmart. I needed something that is not going to break the bank and something everyone in the family can enjoy use because that is practicable.
