Biting the Apple

Latest iPhone update and Apple's response could spell trouble

For the second time in less than a month, Apple is angering the iPhone community. This time over the latest iPhone firmware update. As promised (maybe threatened is a better word), the update had the effect of disabling iPhone’s unlocked using either the free solutions created by the iPhone Dev Team or the commercial iPhoneSIMFree. In a number of cases the unlocked devices appear to be remaining inoperable even if a valid AT&T SIM card is inserted.

The story doesn’t stop there, however. The update also disables all other iPhone hacks, including so-called native applications, the ability to use ringtones created with third-party tools, and the ability to use the device as a portable drive. Unlike with previous updates, the encryption method used to lock down the iPhone appears to be much stronger, making jail-braking an iPhone and installing any non-Apple software impossible (for the moment at least).

Some users who had hacked, but not unlocked their iPhones are also reporting that their phones have become as inoperable as those who had unlocked the device. Even users who have made no modifications whatsoever have also reported that the update bricked their iPhones. Apple is standing firm in refusing to help anyone that appears to have modified their iPhones in any way (no word yet on how users who didn’t modify their phones are being treated).

The general consensus is that users who have in any way modified their iPhone should not update it. If you need to restore your iPhone using an earlier firmware version or if you have upgraded and need to downgrade, there is some information available from iPhone Atlason how to proceed. Gizmodo also has a report on getting an unlocked iPhone working after the update.

The results of this fiasco could be far-reaching. Apple’s hard-line approach isn’t likely to go down easy with users who seemed to be given the green light to modify (if not unlock) their iPhones by an Apple executive last month. The potential mis-quote of an Apple spokesperson that owners of bricked iPhones should “purchase a new iPhone” is also not going to calm anyone’s nerves.

If Apple doesn’t respond to the situation, it could lead to decreased sales, especially as other smartphone manufacturers develop ads pointing out Apple’s handling of the situation. Nokia has already begun an “Open to Anything” ad campaign in response to Apple’s actions.

Some iPhone users are calling for a class-action lawsuit. Such a lawsuit would target three different classes: those who have unlocked their iPhone (there is still some debate over the legality of doing this, though unlocking a mobile phone is one of the exemptions to the digital millennium copyright act), those who have modified the phone to act as a strorage devices, and those who have not modified their iPhone. Regardless of the results of the lawsuit, the bad publicity would ultimately have an impact on how Apple and the iPhone are perceived by the public.

What People Are Saying

Rip!!!

To be fair whos gonna pay that much a month, unless your rich. They should make it pay as you go so you dont have to pay contract!

The contract price is ridiculous

Whilst I do not have any sympathy for the people who are getting bricked with this new update, I have sympathy for the huge amount of money they are paying monthly for an overrated contract. I feel that the contract price should be lowered or unlocking should not be penalised. As you say in your article, it is not illegal to unlock a phone and so therefore people should not get punished if they do unlock it. They have spent a huge amount of money on a hot gadget only to find it being made worthless with a new update...

Yo,come on. All the

Yo,come on. All the hacker nerds needs to get real. The guy a few posts below nailed it. This is mostly straight up business. When you buy a car, you can't modify it. It voids the warranty. This is the same concept people. You bought a device that was made to be used in a certain manner. It's not apple's fault you want to use it in another manner(even if it theoretically can be). For multiple reasons, like the ones listed a few posts back, they don't want you to. Accept it. If you're all so damn bright make your own phone. As far as i'm concerned, the only utterly retarded thing about the iPhone is it's pathetic inability to receive pictures like other normal people....not just through email.
If you're all hell bent on hacking it, try restoring it to the original settings, update, and then hack your phone again. Whatever.

no 3G? no thanks!

The contract here on the UK is ridiculous anyway couple that with the lack of 3G and I really think you are better off with an n95, that is unless you are a dedicated follower of fashion lol

I have had an iphone for

I have had an iphone for less than a month and have performed no hacks and installed no third party software on it. Yet, it has frozen twice on me, both times requiring a significant amount of time attempting to restore the phone using itunes. Although I haven't encountered the brick phase yet, I fear it is right around the corner.

Apple has a serious problem if they are trying so hard to prevent hacking that they screw up their legitimate customers' purchased products. They better fix this or I'm about ready to return the phone altogether.

Did anyone read the EULA?

Did anyone read the EULA? No? Didn't think so. In the EULA, it states that ANY modification to the phone was a direct breach of the contract you agreed to when activating the phone.

The iPhone was an ATT EXCLUSIVE. For the people who don't know what that means, I'll shed a little bit of insight.

ATT and Apple have a contract. Now, a contract is a legal document with a mutual agreement written on it. In this contract, it is explained that Apple MAY NOT let the iPhone be used on any other carrier for 5 years. Be that the case, Apple abided.

Now, there is no doubt in my mind that this was more ATT's doing rather than apple. Apple couldn't care less if you used their phone with another carrier... they still made money off the sale. ATT, however, loses money because the phone isn't being used on their network. They lost sales and then used that BINDING LEGAL CONTRACT against Apple so that they could secure their business.

Now I'm not sure how hard that is to comprehend, but Apple isn't the type of company to just say "No" to something.

Are you people all stupid?

Are you people all stupid? Learn to spell before you go on posting stupid crap. Modifying car engines? Stop with the stupid metaphors. And to the rest of you, stop hanging on Apple's balls like its your daddy's company. Apple sucks, get a life.

I love how people who have

I love how people who have paid for the phones say they paid too much. Do not complain about the price if YOU paid for it. Apple did not twist your arm into buying an iPhone. YOU, as an adult with an adult's brain, bought the phone. People need to learn to take responsibility for their actions.

Again, YOU bought the phone knowing you would not be able to install third-party apps on it. I agree with Apple. Besides, it's a phone with the essentials. This phone is not a desktop replacement, and it should not be. It's a PHONE.

If YOU hacked or tampered with either the hardware or the software, it is your own fault. Do not blame Apple for something YOU did wrong. If you want a phone that is not carried by your wireless carrier, tough. Everyone else has to deal with it and so do you.

you SERIOUSLY missed the

you SERIOUSLY missed the point on people complaining about paying too much for the iPhone. many of us DID NOT KNOW that the phone would not be able to do BASIC functions like sending a text to multiple recipients PRIOR to purchasing it. for this reason, AFTER THE FACT, we are pissed off.

furthermore, features such as CUT AND PASTE are mandatory on ANY PDA device. the fact that Apple marketed this phone to such a large target market and didnt include these BASIC features that anyone with a life would depend on, is FALSE ADVERTISING. and that is why we are so irritated with the price we paid for the phone.

Now, if you are an old, decrepit dinosuar--which it sounds like you are--maybe you shouldnt come on here and bitch about technological issues that are beyond your time. burry yourself instead.
thank you.

Sorry I TOTALLY disagree. A

Sorry I TOTALLY disagree. A company that tells you what the phone can do should not be held responsible for YOU not finding out if what it does do is or is not part of what you consider "Basic Functions". It was an easily discoverable FACT. Why did you ASSUME and then blame them for your ASSUMPTION?

Cut and Paste is not "Mandatory" at all, perhaps beneficial to you and many other but "Mandatory" .... no. There is not law. I use mine quite fine without such ... and really isnt it time the consumer took some responsibility in buying a product that presents itself no differently from which it is? I just find the "FALSE ADVERTISING" claim a bit disgusting really... really poor. Apple 'target' advertises the phone to a particular market (one with a life I guess) and that market does not take the time to READ what the phone does? Well maybe they were a bit busy with their lives. See I knew this phone did not cut and paste because I asked and I elected to live without it. False Advertising? No not at all. If Apple would have said our phone cuts and pastes --- yes false. They did not. YOU ASSUMED it did because YOU believe that everyone is just like you (with a life) and wants the same as you do --- really this is is less to do with Apple's False Advertisement than with a False or faulty ego.

Oh and the last point.... we have all heard that before and yes once again very distinctive ego. Anyone who dares present a contrary point is an old dinosaur, someone not to be taken seriously. I mean how could they --- they present a view contrary to your own. EGO they name is man.

When you think you know best and you can therefore speak for entire segments of buyers then I guess it follows that you can speak for or at least ASSUME that a company will build any product to fit YOUR need exactly.Of course anyone who dissents is either somebody without a life or a dinosaur. Still with all that insight, all that enlightenment how you FAILED to get a product that did not fit your needs amazes me.... Oh yeah I forgot they (blame on them not you for FAILING to ASK, READ and LEARN (but why would you, you already know) they "False Advertised".

Ah those times that we could learn so much about ourselves simply wasted by pointing the finger in the opposite direction.
