Seeing Through Windows

Republican Ron Paul gets the botnet vote

Republican presidential candidate Ron Paul appears to be getting support from unusual supporters -- an illegal, globe-spanning network of spam-spewing robots, according to the University of Alabama.

Wired News reports that the University of Alabama's Spam Data Mining for Law Enforcement Applications project has found that large amounts of spam are being sent in support of Paul, with subject lines such as "Ron Paul Wins GOP Debate! HMzjoqO." The random characters at the end of the subject line are put there in an attempt to fool spam filters.

The PCs spewing the spam are hijacked PCs from all over the world, including South Korea, Japan, the United Kingdom, Nigeria and Brazil.

There are absolutely no connections between the spam and the campaign. "This is clearly a criminal act in support of a campaign, which has been committed with or without their knowledge," Gary Warner, the University of Alabama's director of research in computer forensics, told Wired.

There's no way to know whether it's being done by a misguided supporter, or by someone trying to embarrass the campaign. Wired notes that Paul's supporters tend to be a very tech-savvy bunch, and are very vocal online. Wired notes, "Some participants in the online political world have long suspected Paul's technically sophisticated fan base of manipulating online tools and polls to boost the appearance of a wide base of support."

No matter who's doing it, though, expect this to be only the beginning of online political dirty tricks by many others. When power, money, and egos are involved, things get very nasty very quickly. One way or another, it'll all show up online.

What People Are Saying

Tainted, informal,

Tainted, informal, unscientific millions of dollars donated

Republican presidential candidate Ron Paul appears to be getting unusual support from real humans -- a legal, nation-spanning network of money-spewing $110 contributors, according to Washington Post, MSNBC, Yahoo, ABC News reports. Over 3.5 million in one
day and still rolling in with hours to go.

Smile

The smearing is great, Its

The smearing is great, Its good to have the right wing baseless smear attack lying war mongering totalitarian neocon scum show their contempt for a non-authoritarian that believes in the constitution. Good job neocons, show the public the criminal SCUM that you are. The more you trash Ron Paul, the more he will rise from the ashes and cinders of the country YOU, the neocons, burned to the ground. YOU controlled the house, the senate and the white house, and THIS IS YOUR MESS.

The MSM and the military industrial complex ONLY fear Ron Paul. be sure to vote for Ron Paul and fight hard for him. If you do not vote for and support Ron Paul, the country will turn into a dystopian fascist state.

All the Ron Paul "credit card fraud" and "spam" and "criminal botnet" stories have been proven and smears and lies.

I 100% believe it was from

I 100% believe it was from the Giuliani Forum and Sarah Stirland as this video shows.
Did a Giuliani Supporter do it to discredit Ron Paul. Why is the first place to pick up the story after wired was Fox?

Video evidence it was from a Giuliani forumn a setup that Sarah Lei Striland was paid to write to discredit the RP supporters as only internet.
http://www.youtube.com/v/U5LgUiz2mBA

Wired has already retracted / corrected the story.
~~~~~~~~~~
Fox news caught openly discussing censcuring ron paul before the Sept 27th debate and they were pulling out all the stops to prove the text messages were "rigged"
They are lost credibility big time and are stricking back.
Fox caught censuring.
It would be interesting if
It would be interesting if all these emails were sent out by one guy's botnet -- then he recovered some of the emails his botnet sent by this system -- and then lastly reported by the same guy as to say, "Look, Ron Paul's fans are a hoax! Because I found these emails that are untraceable!"
That would be an interesting twist.
Shame on you for repeating
Shame on you for repeating these slanderous lies. This unscientific accusation of 'spam' (Which I have NEVER seen, and I do get a ton of spam!) affects NO ONE. You can't email in a response to the majority of online polls, you click on them once. You CANNOT vote more than once since the ISP is tracked.
I'd like to see some HARD proof about these so-called spams, or I will have to deduce that this is nothing more than a Neo Con Artist attempt to smear the one man in the Republican running who they can't buy and pocket.
The whole thing was a fake
The whole thing was a fake set up by Rudy Supporters. Here's the evidence:
I'm glad it was sent out. Someone needs to deligitimize that moonbat. Dishonesty is honorabe when used against people like Paul who want to return us to a constitutional government that is hindered in the fight against terrurism. Everything changed after 911
As a reader of ComputerWorld
As a reader of ComputerWorld for over a decade I am rather dismayed about this. Why has some in the tech community jumped on this "scandal" bandwagon? Or more importantly why doesn't ComputerWorld "verify" these findings prior to spewing inuendo? I do not expect this type of knee jerk behavior from our industry.
This spam accusation is
This spam accusation is probably the single most rediculous conspiracy theory nonsense I have heard yet. It really is unbelievable to see the lengths people will go to in order to fight against liberty and the American constitution. I wonder who amongst the liberals (Clinton, Obama,Giuliani) have come up with this nonsense. I mean is it really that hard to accept that people want a move back the constitution and traditional conservatism? And that people want America to go back to being....well....America? But in a way its good, opposers of the constitution are being driven into fear because Ron Paul has to be taken seriously, these lies and tall stories are a sign that Paul has a VERY strong chance at being the next president.
Never mind the forum; what's
Never mind the forum; what's a "Rudy"?
Wired Magazine - This article has been modified to clarify that Warner has seen no evidence suggesting that the Paul campaign is responsible for the spam.
