Was the Ron Paul botnet attack a dirty trick?

In a recent blog, I wrote about about spam-spewing robots sending out spam in support of Republican presidential candidate Ron Paul. That spam has caused his campaign nothing but grief. Could it be a political dirty trick by an opponent's supporters?

Some new information has come to light since the original revelation. It appears that there were two types of spam. One type contained Paul's standard political pitch --- to read it, check out this blog from dslreport.com.

The other type contained links to videos about Ron Paul on YouTube. And this is where it's hurt the campaign. The McAfee Avert Labs Blog, run by security vendor McAfee, notes that YouTube took down Ron Paul videos because spam linked to them, in keeping with standard YouTube practice, which takes down links if they're related to spam. That clearly hurts the campaign.

The bad press hurts the campaign as well, because the University of Alabama, McAfee, and security vendor BitDefender have all issued reports on the spam. The press has reported on it widely.

There's no way to know who launched the botnet attack. Certainly, Ron Paul's opponents are gaining from it. On the other hand, you can't rule out a misguided supporter doing it on his own, either.

My favorite comment about it comes from the McAfee Avert Labs Blog. Someone, commenting on the attack, wrote this: "This is either a toxic attack from another campaign -- similar things have happened already -- or it’s a complete imbecile."

I couldn't have said it any better. Given that it's political season, expect more toxic attacks....and more complete imbeciles as well, on all sides.

What People Are Saying

You are reprinting criminal

You are reprinting criminal libel. This was debunked.

The establishment has been

The establishment has been desperate to prove that Ron Paul support is fake. Manufacturing false-flag spam was an obvious ploy from the warmongers.

Look at all the stupid media that fell for it.

"The one thing that has hurt RP the most is the spammers, their constant profanity, and the hate they spew."

- No. The thing that has hurt the Paul campaign the most is the media's refusal to provide objective coverage of his campaign and allow the people to simply decide for themselves based on accurate reporting of THE ISSUES...oddly, the larger and more relevant subject they seem to want to stay away from and not go toe-to-toe with Ron Paul on during this whole campaign.
* Sean Hannity was dead wrong (and he knew it) when he lied to his viewers and told them that people were text-voting over and over...this was impossible to do.
* Why is it that we've been hearing more news stories SPECULATING as to whether Ron Paul's support is the stuff of spam...rather than the FACT that he has more money from active and retired military than ANY other candidate, that he raised $1million on his webstie in ONE WEEK, has more cash than McCain or Huckabee, and that he had a 114% increase during a quarter where every other candidate suffered a LOSS? Answer = PURE BIAS.

hosers2:
"RP doesn't have a chance in hadies of winning. You brag about money raised. Spell it out in actual numbers, comparing it to the other candidates and see who actually has the most support.

Exclude Romneys loans to his own campaign and he still brings in about twenty times as much money as Paul."

- First off, its spelled "HADES."

Second, you were about as right on that as you are on Romney...either again, because of your own ignorance ont he subject or because you simply lied.
Dont believe me, ask the Associated Press:

"Among Republicans, Mitt Romney spent $21 million during the third quarter, more than twice what he raised during the period and more than what he spent in previous quarters, according to his FEC report."

So that would put Romney somewhere around $10 million for last quarter, right? How is $10million "20 times" $5million, again? Because I would think its more like "double"...not factoring in WHAT HE OWES, mind you- which actually puts ol' Mitt IN THE RED.

hosers2:
"There are plenty of imbecils in the RP camp to choose from. Pick one."

- I think you meant, "I-M-B-E-C-I-L-E"
People in glass houses shouldnt throw stones.

Ron Paul spammers have been

Ron Paul spammers have been at it for months now. Why is it now a plot (conspiracy by libertarian standards) done by someone else not affiliated with RP? Pretty ingenious, I would say! Once you guys find out that the spamming is hurting Paul more than helping, you turn it around and try to blame someone else.
The one thing that has hurt RP the most is the spammers, their constant profanity, and the hate they spew.

The media wants you to

The media wants you to believe this is hurting the campaign, but they don't point to any proof of that. On the contrary, he just appeared on Jay Leno. He's going to report another increase in donations this quarter! He's making new converts all of the time. He gets so many hits on his website that it crashes - even though they just upgraded the site due to the overwhelming traffic which DWARFS every other candidate. A Rassmussen poll just came out which conlucded that he has the most chance of beating Hillary.

This hurts him??? Bogus! The media's bashing of Ron Paul has probably done more to help him at this point, than hurt him.

It's absolutely lame that the media is using this to discredit Ron Paul. It only shows how desperate they are to find some way to dismiss him.

Anyone else here a bit

Anyone else here a bit confused?

Because I am....namely as to why this largely speculative story about some spam being sent out by a mysterious "somebody" (who is admittedly not part of the Ron Paul campaign) is newsworthy at all.

If I were looking for a real shady-campaign/manufactured-support kind of news story, I think I'd report on....oh I dont know...
- Hillary Clinton and Norman Hsu
- Hillary Clinton and Peter Paul
- Mitt Romney donating more money to himself than he's been able to actually RAISE
- Rudy Giuliani running as a "hero of 911"...despite the fact that the NYPD and FDNY seem to VERY VOCALLY insist that he's an opportunistic coward who failed in every possible way in both preparing for such a disaster and managing it afterwards.

Surely Hillary Clinton benefiting from illegal fundraisers by known convicts and 15-year federal fugitives to the tune of millions is pertinent news?

Surely Mitt Romney (a "frontrunner") literally having to buy his own way into a whitehouse bid because he cant inspire enough people to donate is interesting?

Surely Rudy Giuliani's campaigning on being "America's Mayor" and "the hero of 911" deserves some perspective and opinion from the NYPD and FDNY- two huge organizations of the city he supposedly governed so miraculously and the ACTUAL RESCUERS of 911?

Honestly, Im confused.
- Why are we hearing next to NOTHING about the stories above?
- Why is it not newsworthy to point out that Ron Paul receives more money from active and retired military than ANY other candidate?
- Why is it not newsworthy that he draws more people to his rallies than any other Republican in the race?
- Why is it not newsworthy that although he accepts no special interest money or coporate donations, he can raise over a million dollars in WEBSITE donations in ONE WEEK?
- Why, for the love of god, is it not newsworthy that A 72 YEAR OLD HARDCORE CONSERVATIVE is energizing YOUNG PEOPLE across the country and leading marches of hundreds of people through the streets of freakin' SAN FRANCISCO?

Why is "somebody unaffiliated with the campaign spammed Ron Paul messages to other people" a more newsworthy story than the things I just mentioned? Why are news organizations JUMPING on this and ignoring the rest?

When you consider the above questions (which I believe are quite valid), this entire non-issue backfires on the media that presents it as so pertinent- showing evidence of contempt for Ron Paul's campaign.

Kudos to the author of the article for providing another perspective, but again- allt hings considered I believe this whole thing is conspicuously irrelevant in the first place...

I did it. I admit I'm the

I did it. I admit I'm the mad Spammer!
I used a sophisticated combination of Ubuntu and Yellowdog in an ISO 2000 environment compiled using HP's Toaster for Vista, the graphics were created with, um, paint... and..
Heck, I don't know what I'm talking and about, just like this guy.

Don't believe everything you read folks. Yellow journalism is BACK!

I think you're giving yourself too much credit; if anything, the botnet "scandal" has been ignored.

We're too busy changing the election.
