Tips for locking down laptops

Since writing the column, Lose Laptops Sink Data I've received quite a bit of feedback on this subject, including lots of information from vendors of encryption products for laptops. Here are some of the more interesting items from my inbox:

Lockerware:
Here's an unusual  "back to school" item: Laptop Lockers from Amercan Locker Corp. These are literally metal lockers that stack into a rack, each with its own external inferface for recharging. The units fit into racks for use in schools government facilities and other settings, the company says. The units use either a padlock, keyed lock or electronic lock. Check out the photos on the Web site.

Hardened Hard Disk: If you're waiting for Seagate's hardware-based disk encryption another alternative is Rockstor's Rocsecure Rocbit series of external hard disk drives. The units were just announced this week and support DES and Triple DES encryption.

Laptop Cop: Kevin Coffey, a former police detective, has made a career lecturing on laptop security and other security topics. One seminar focuses on how to avoid having your laptop physically stolen in the first place.
