IPod cellphone
- IT TOPICS:Hardware, Macintosh & Apple
Does it matter to IT managers whether or not Apple will start building iPod cellphones? Not right away. But eventually, if Apple and Motorola actually beginning shipping the devices, they will become one of the larger number of endpoints on the corporate network. End users will start using it as their contact management tool; they'll start downloading apps and games; they'll use it as their communications device of choice.
"It's a toy," I hear you screaming. Perhaps. But it is one of the most popular (maybe the most popular) handheld device in the 21st century.
I don't think that popularity will fade as it adds muscle to its feature set and becomes less toy-like and more work-like. I think it behooves IT to keep an eye on the iPod. CIOs may have figured out how to keep Macs out of their operations, but they may not be able to stave off the iPod.
