Katrina horrifies, Tablet sales disappoint, MaryJo.com.com.com (and grilled cheese satisfies)
In today's IT Blogwatch, we look at the effects of hurricane Katrina, underperforming tablet PC sales, and a big "hi" to Mary Jo. Not to mention grilled cheese...
Hurricane Katrina blogged. Despite earlier reports, N'awlins will never be the same again. Craig "craigslist" Newmark collects community resources. JD Lassica points to disturbing video compiled from citizen journalists. Despite crippled infrastructure, Ernie "the attorney" Svenson managed to blog from the eye of the storm via SMS. Kevin Adam recommends befriending your local radio ham. Local bloggers are also congregating (virtually) at Metroblogging New Orleans. Here's a blog all about the situation in Slidell. MSNBC's reporters blog from the "now-not-so-Super-dome." HP is "evaluating the viability" of its September conference, but "Anonymous" is saddened, doubting very much that it'll happen. Wikipedia has a comprehensive page on the events. This blogger remembers my last experience of flooding in New Orleans, at EMA'95—my heart goes out to the people in the area.
Tablet PCs are terribly boring, it seems. Must be true: Mary Jo says so (again). MVP Rob Bushway advises: a must-read. Warner Crocker calls it pretty sobering news. While we've heard a lot of the info before, with conflicting analysis, I think that simple fact points to confusion all around that can't be a good thing. Mary Jo "no relation" Sminkey KNOWS what's wrong: I went to all the local tech stores and couldn't even FIND a tablet at most of them. The only one I found was at a Staples, and you really wouldn't even know it was a tablet, with it locked up in normal notebook fashion. And I live in a region PACKED with computer professionals. Lora Heiny thinks Microsoft should take a leaf from the Apple Store playbook and consider experience centers in prime locations, such as right across the street from Moscone in San Francisco, where people can learn about and try new technology. James Kendrick wonders aloud how do you make a Tablet PC a “no-brainer” purchase decision? While my needs may very well be different than other users I know what would do it for me. A killer app ... a collaboration tool that totally supports ink, audio and video.
Mary Jo also provides us with her handy list of WinFS links ... errr ... which is mostly the same list that I published in yesterday's IT Blogwatch ;-)
