Nokia N97 fails as an iPhone competitor

Another iPhone killer has emerged....

This one from Nokia, the world's largest cell phone manufacturer. How can I be so certain that it will fail?

1. The product name is lacking. You can't fall in love with a "N97" or a "N810" unless your name is C3PO or R2D2. Nokia has gotten away with not differentiating their product names for so long because they've had great specs, an adequate user experience and some good marketing. In this new competitive smartphone field, you need to be able to form a connection with your device. Nokia isn't creating that. For techies this doesn't matter (I had a Nokia N95 and used to know their whole product line) but for the other 90% of the population, this is a big differentiator. Something like "iPhone" or "Chocolate" or "RAZR" will always beat a set of numbers and letters.

2. Nokia's specs are great but are also not absurdly better than iPhone. Nothing below will be a game changer for most consumers, especially when not integrated as well as they are on the iPhone. There is no killer app feature.

  • 5 megapixel camera with flash
  • 3.5", 640x360 resistive touch screen (not glass)
  • QWERTY slide out keyboard
  • 3G, WiFi, GPS
  • 32GB on board expandable to 48Gb

3. Apps Store. While there are good apps available for the Symbian platform, developers are forced to, yet again, retool their apps for this phone, its screen size and its processor. Not nearly as many will as are putting out great Apple Apps Store content (10,000 apps and counting - about 1/10th are good). The Apps Store is a hit with everyone involved including webmasters who advertise apps on their sites and get commissions. You can't create a whole ecosystem like this overnight.

4. Nokia is no longer the de facto Smartphone. In fact, its numbers are dropping dramatically, while Apple's are skyrocketing. Google's Android platform is also capturing imagination while Blackberry is coming out with some (relatively) exciting models.

5. Symbian is no longer the hot platform. Apple is obviously hot, but the new kid on the block in the open source space is Google with its Android platform. Mindshare is waning for Symbian.

6. The user interface is clunky. Just watch the video below. It seems way more complex than necessary, and slow.

7. It is a third thicker than the iPhone. Probably due to the QWERTY keyboard, this won't feel nearly as good in a tight pocket or even on the ear for a long call. Also the iPhone is one piece of hard material while the N97 is the flip variety. While these aesthetic issues may seem minor, the difference in feel will be significant. (Thanks commenter)

Dimensions:
Phone 115.5 x 62.1 x 12.3mm
N97 117.2 x 55.3 x 15.9mm

8. There are websites devoted to the iPhone interface. The N97 is just another face in the crowd mobile platform that won't get specialized webpages developed like the iPhone.

9. It will be available during the middle of next year. By then the next iPhone will be right around the corner - likely with a lot of the N97's differentiating functions and more.

10. All of the other iPhone and iPod killers before the N97 have failed. This isn't much different. Look at the Toshiba G900 released last year. Better specs all around, but barely noticable. I don't want to be a Ballmer here: "No chance!" but I really can't see where this Nokia phone hopes to differentiate itself. I am sure you Nokia fans can help me in the comments.

What People Are Saying

Why Nokia Doesn't Name Its Phones

Check out the video on why Nokia doesn't name its phones:

I like the iPhone, I don't

I like the iPhone, I don't have one but must say I'm a fan. But I got the N97 yesterday, and I must say it was as good as I was expecting it to be, it's great. I think the only reason for anyone to buy an iPhone is just so they can say they have one. If you seriously want a phone, go for one of the nokia N series phones, I've had 4 every one of them better than the iPhone.

N97 is amazing, it's beautiful. Only problem I have at the moment is lack of downloads in the ovi store. But other than this it is the perfect phone.

Iphone and nokia n97

Hello everyone ,
This article is totally biased. This fanboy is trying to downgrade nokia n 97. I have been using an iPhone 3g for three months and I just bought an N 97(white). I am going to be honest, the phone is an absolute beauty(it stands out, but it's not loud). The color looks better than a white iPhone, To me iphone's white color is cheesy and nokia's is decent and classy but it can be a personal opinion. The best part is the keyboard of this phone , which iPhone doesn't have and trust me it makes a big difference if you text a lot. Browsing is very good but at some point I felt that iphone's browser is better. Another good feature about the phone is that you can download anything you want from the Internet for example: songs , videos, pictures anything and on top of that the 5mp camera, which takes amazing high quality pictures and videos 16:9 ratio. You can easily watch them on your Tv or put them on YouTube. In contrast, iphone lack all these features. Bottom line, iphone is a good phone but nokia has some very advance features that puts iPhone way behind.
Thanks
Ali

fanboy

i don't really need to add my comment as others appear to have said it all already.

hardly a well-balanced argument, is it?

some people prefer the iphone, some prefer nokia. i prefer nokia, always have, probably always will. it's swings and roundabouts.

U R a Fanboy.

The author of this article is a fanboy.

Wow Seth. I like the iphone

Wow Seth. I like the iphone and love its apps. However, you are just BIASED toward apple and love your iphone to death. Nokia still makes great devices. Don't try to minimized them.

Always the iphone fanboys....

Why do you fanboys always slag off every other phone that is not the iphone. I have a N95 8gb and it is way better and more reliable than my sons iphone. The camera is tons better, bluetooth, video etc. Yes a new iphone has been announced and it has ground breaking new features like, a 3.2 megapixel camera and video recording, WOW! welcome to to normal phone spec!
Apple like with the ipods, suck you inbreeds in and you pay too much for an inferior product just because it has a fruit on it! Good luck, I will be getting a N97 and will be more than impressed with it.

The iPhone only has the apps

The iPhone only has the apps store going for it and as mentioned in the artical the majority of them are garbage, it has a poor camera and the phone itself is poor. The iPhone is pure apple style over substance. Nokia are not calling the N97 an iPhone killer but it will have facebook and Skype apps these along with the camera (5 mega-pixels and DVD quality video) and 48G storage will make it formidable. In the end it comes down to what type of person you are, if you follow the latest trend blindly then you will go for the iPhone if not you will look at all the alternatives and choose the best phone for your needs. With this in mind the N97 could be a smart choice given its specs.

The N97 looks great. Is it

The N97 looks great. Is it going to be sold unlocked to any carrier in the US? I might trade in my iphone for this, since the n97 has better specs:
Clashem

the i phone was hot like 2

the i phone was hot like 2 yrs back since then ive had like 4 other phones and why people keep ranting about the i phone is quite obvious-- they havent tried anything else... sure the i phones thin but if u want close to decent pics u gotta carry a cam coz frankly the i phone cam sux 2 mega pix!
as for applications nokia does have a huge n established community for applications over thousands of web sites.
and nokias touch is quite good after trying the tube
Omnia was way better than the i phone too with double the memory and a 5 megapix cam

i think the n 97 would easily mow down the i phone with 48 gb storage, personalizable menus like the X1, 5 mpx cam, really cool internet browser n Nokia maps for navigation

So people dont compare a f-11 with a Sukoy 37
and as for people who buy things for how its named come on ..... thatz just lame sorry!!
