Apple versus Google

Nokia N97 fails as an iPhone competitor

Another iPhone killer has emerged....

This one from Nokia, the world's largest cell phone manufacturer. How can I be so certain that it will fail?

1. The product name is lacking. You can't fall in love with a "N97" or a "N810" unless your name is C3PO or R2D2. Nokia has gotten away with not differentiating their product names for so long because they've had great specs, an adequate user experience and some good marketing. In this new competitive smartphone field, you need to be able to form a connection with your device. Nokia isn't creating that. For techies this doesn't matter (I had a Nokia N95 and used to know their whole product line) but for the other 90% of the population, this is a big differentiator. Something like "iPhone" or "Chocolate" or "RAZR" will always beat a set of numbers and letters.

2. Nokia's specs are great but are also not absurdly better than iPhone. Nothing below will be a game changer for most consumers, especially when not integrated as well as they are on the iPhone. There is no killer app feature.

  • 5 megapixel camera with flash
  • 3.5", 640x360 resistive touch screen (not glass)
  • QWERTY slide out keyboard
  • 3G, WiFi, GPS
  • 32GB on board expandable to 48Gb

3. Apps Store. While there are good apps available for the Symbian platform, developers are forced to, yet again, retool their apps for this phone, its screen size and its processor. Not nearly as many will as are putting out great Apple Apps Store content (10,000 apps and counting - about 1/10th are good). The Apps Store is a hit with everyone involved including webmasters who advertise apps on their sites and get commissions. You can't create a whole ecosystem like this overnight.

4. Nokia is no longer the de facto Smartphone. In fact, its numbers are dropping dramatically, while Apple's are skyrocketing. Google's Android platform is also capturing imagination while Blackberry is coming out with some (relatively) exciting models.

5. Symbian is no longer the hot platform. Apple is obviously hot, but the new kid on the block in the open source space is Google with its Android platform. Mindshare is waning for Symbian.

6. The user interface is clunky. Just watch the video below. It seems way more complex than necessary, and slow.

7. It is a third thicker than the iPhone. Probably due to the QWERTY keyboard, this won't feel nearly as good in a tight pocket or even on the ear for a long call. Also the iPhone is one piece of hard material while the N97 is the flip variety. While these aesthetic issues may seem minor, the difference in feel will be significant. (Thanks commenter)

Dimensions:
Phone 115.5 x 62.1 x 12.3mm
N97 117.2 x 55.3 x 15.9mm

8. There are websites devoted to the iPhone interface. The N97 is just another face in the crowd mobile platform that won't get specialized webpages developed like the iPhone.

9. It will be available during the middle of next year. By then the next iPhone will be right around the corner - likely with a lot of the N97's differentiating functions and more.

10. All of the other iPhone and iPod killers before the N97 have failed. This isn't much different. Look at the Toshiba G900 released last year. Better specs all around, but barely noticable. I don't want to be a Ballmer here: "No chance!" but I really can't see where this Nokia phone hopes to differentiate itself. I am sure you Nokia fans can help me in the comments.

What People Are Saying

While the reviewer is

While the reviewer is undoubtedly bias (Apple fanboy indeed), I do generally agree with the article's overall sentiment - that the N97 is not "the iphone killer". I've been a Nokia user forever, and I've had a N97 for about a month now. Personally, I love the phone. IMO it has many more features and customization capabilities than the iphone, and I just LOVE the keyboard. My sister has an iphone and I've had plenty of experience with them, and I have to say that the reason I think the iphone will continue to lead the smartphones is because of two main reasons - it's fast (whereas the N97 can lag at times) and it's extremely user friendly. The iphone does also IMO have more of the "cool" or "fun" factor as well. Apple truly revolutionised the mobile phone market with the iphone, and I think it will take something truly special to knock it off its pedestal. No smartphone has done it yet, and perhaps no phone will. I mean, the iphone has been in circulation for a couple of years now, yet it just seems to be going from strength to strength. Not surprising really, as it is Apple's only phone on offer, whereas Nokia (and other companies) have several models of phones (although the N97 is only Nokia's 2nd smartphone). The fact that the iphone can't do some simple things that Nokia mobiles have been doing since the dawn of time (eg cut and paste, video recording, multitasking) is probably further testament to the mass appeal of the phone. All that being said, however, I still chose to get the N97 because it has many more functions than the iphone, and I guess I'm just so comfortable with Nokia phones. And I don't regret it one bit. Many say that the Symbian OS is outdated (which I do agree with) and the phone is occasionally slow and buggy, but I've had so much fun getting to know the N97 that its shortcomings are outweighed by its awesome features and capabilities. I'm confident that the upcoming firmware update due next month will improve the phone's performance and fix the major bugs. Then, I think that the N97 will be given a new beginning, and its full potential will really be unleashed (fingers crossed). Still, it's not the iphone killer. Maybe the Nokia N900 due later this year will be...

HAHAHA....you should not write publically

One suggestion: you should get rid of all the things that have most common and boring names...like water, food, sleep (I bet pompus people like you invest all of their time in doing some fascinating things like "globe-trotting", "bringing global perspective to technology development" etc.)
Point is that, the choice you are making may be or may not be right based on individual preferance, but your is logic certainly useless. Not everybody like to invest their money/energy to become a ´show off´, in fact higher percentage of human kind actually prefer to live a productive life. Just that they rarely invest their time making noise on internet.... that makes you (and obviously some stupid marketing strategy people) think that world full of morons that buy anything just for its name.

Your so wrong it's untrue.

Your so wrong it's untrue.

supoli i cant be mad at

supoli i cant be mad at you...some people were just born stupid.

bs ur not a nokia fanboy i bet that N97 felt real nice in ur ass. but then id be upset if i couldnt afford an iphone.

Let me prove you wrong

1. Apple is totally in the letter-number-combination bandwagon with 3GS.

2. The keyboard is essential if you want to type anything.

3. App store is good but Apple being the dictator beheading lots of interesting applications and totally restricting alternative installation methods.

4. Well with almost 50% market share some could claim that Nokia still is.

5. Open source or openness is not really something Apple does better than Nokia, in fact it's the other way around. I agree that Symbian is not hot, maybe never been, but as it seems Nokia is swithching their smartphones into open source Maemo platform.

6. I guess Apple does the UI stuff well.

7. Wear loose pants, they're more comfortable anyway. The difference in feeling the keyboard is even more significant comparing to poking the display and guessing what's the letter that was just pressed. Though the N97 keyboard could be better.

8. It's capable of browsing the REAL websites, it doesn't require UI designated for it.

9. 3GS doesn't have any HW feature that's superior. HW keyboard > multitouch.

10. One day or another the iPhone killer will come.

I'm really not a Nokia fan (more of the opposite), but I really hate you Apple fanboys. I have used both iPhone and N97, but iPhone was the one I returned back after a week. It might be that N97 will not become the iPhone killer, but that doesn't prove your statements were right.

exhibit A: you can't fall

exhibit A: you can't fall in love with the name.

you lost the game. enjoy failing at being useful all your life. i'm sure an iphone is better for dicking around, but i'd rather have a keyboard.

the sunny side is that thanks to all the people who are big enough tools to put up with at&t as a carrier, i enjoy better voice and data service on any other network. last week i was in new york laughing when all of my friends' iphones promptly become useless for an hour every day at 12PM and 5PM.

How wrong can you get?

I happen to have an n97 white edition, an 8gb iphone and a blackberry pearl 8120 and the n97 is the best by far, apple are only doing well with the iphone cause it hasnt changed at all in nearly 4 years, it looks the same, does the same stuff they just make it faster every year or add more memory to it, nokia on the other hand create a whole new phone with a whole new symbian firmware on it, so as far as im concerned nokia out performs apple by miles and apple should get some new designers in to make a "new" phone not change the colour of an exisiting phone, as for the app store if you've been around for 4 years your bound to have lots of people adding stuff, if you've been around 4 weeks you don't expect anywere near to apples app store

Well....I wonder how much

Well....I wonder how much this self centered moron got from Apple to write this crap. Read his Bio....he is so full of himself...Mr. Wientraub...do you even have a girlfriend or wife...If so, I feel sorry for them.

The Iphone is made for gamers like yourself who still live in moms basement. When you grow up and want a real business phone, then maybe you should look into a blackberry or a Nokia. Until then refrain from commenting about some thing (real business and the real world where people use their cell phones to conduct business)you know nothing about.

Zip it....

I agree with that, I just

I agree with that, I just hate people who thinks apple is better just because THEY think it's better. If someone is happy with his Nokia, Samsung, G1, LG or whatever, it's his choice. My friend keeps telling me his apple stuff is so great, but meanwhile I remember an article about environment and mobile phone manufacturers...guess who was a shame for our environment http://www.greenercomputing.com/files/document/guide-to-greener-electronics-12-edition.pdf

Hi, I just purchased Apple
