The Security Sector

Nothing lasts forever, but a year and two weeks?..C'mon!

In February 2007, I signed up for FiOS as soon as it became available in my area. Liberating myself from the iron grip of my cable provider, I found this new fiber-optic wonder far exceeded my expectations.

Since the coax in my circa 1938 house was antediluvian, the Verizon tech had to install all new lines in my house. In order for FiOS to work, you need to use the Verizon provided Actiontec Mega Modem. A monster of a modem/router, this beast worked well - even though it was just for a year. Then, after just one year and two weeks, the modem simply died. One minuteĀ  the entire family was online each doing our thing, the next...dead as in kaput.

I called Verizon and they confirmed my fears that the modem had come to an un-timely demise. They quickly ordered a new one for me and shipped it out UPS. That was on a Wednesday evening and the new modem arrived on Friday (not a moment too soon as we were starting to suffer withdrawal).

Anyway, when the next Verizon bill came, I noticed they charged me for the new modem. Apparently there's only a one year warranty on these things and I was just two weeks beyond getting a free replacement. It seemed like the modem waited for the warranty to expire and then -- expire. I hate when that happens - especially when it costs me $130 bucks.

What People Are Saying

FiOS TV

Did you get triple play? If so, because of the MoCA component for the TV they are suppose to replace the modem for free. If you have FiOS TV you might want to give them a call. Verizon's billing system is one of the worst and they might have just billed you in error.

Bad move on Verizon's part

As much as I hate Comcast, and I truly, truly, can't wait to kick them to the curb, they at least replace their broken hardware for free. Heck, Comcast even gives you new batteries if you're so inclined to drive to their office (or at least they did).

If Verizon wants widespread acceptance of FiOS, they need to better understand the current market environment. People magnify any perception of the slightest step backwards when adopting magic new technologies.

Having said that, if Verizon isn't "renting" you the box, then maybe I can cut them some slack. Comcast hits me for $15/month for 2 cable boxes...

Nothing Lasts For Ever...

Did you try to negotiate with Verizon about the warranty period? May they would wave the price or knock a big chunk off of it. Two weeks is a very short time. I would think they would offer you something if you asked nicely.
