Now that iPod event is over, let's talk MacBooks!

Now that all of the hoopla over the Let's Rock event is behind us, we can start talking about the important stuff ... Macs. The whole Macintosh line is really due for an update with the iMac the only real update done this year.

It is becoming clear that early/mid October is the time for new MacBooks to hit the streets. Updates are due across the whole portable line, MacBooks, Airs, and Pros. It is also conceivable that Apple could introduce a new line of portable device.

Lots of rumors and inside information have already begun swirling. I'll devote the next week to putting it all together ... what have you heard?

New Apple MacBook Series:
MacBook Pro
MacBook
MacBook Air

What People Are Saying

Blu-Ray

The oh-so-cutting-edge Apple will probably finally offer Blu-Ray drives, years after they were offered by other computer companies.

aggressive prices?

i hope the rumours of new aggressive prices for macbooks come true :)

MacBooks to gain NVIDIA graphics

According to Digitimes, the NVIDIA MCP79A chipset is due for release by the end of September. The chipset comes with either a GeForce 9300M or 9400M core.

PC Perspective believe these will be included in the new MacBook revision.

'all about the Brick'.

The current macbook pros are almost perfect. Not much to change.

I think we are in for glass multitouch trackpad.

And regarding the "brick" this could be the big change!

I think it means wireless power.

That makes the new laptops completely wireless..USB...Power etc.

http://www.ecoupled.com/ has the technology and apple seems like the right company to implement it.

Wireless power doubtful

I don't think the wireless power is advanced enough to work here. We would be seeing a lot more adoption in other areas if this was possible. - think of all power lines on the road being outfitted with this. then you could have electric cars that are being charged just by driving down the road!)

Anyway. again, not quite the level we need it to be yet on that one.

I think what would be helpful, with regard to the brick is if they found a way to integrate the brick into the laptop itself. that way the cord would be just that.

the only down side i would see is that your laptop would then be heavier, which is a big downside. I think i would rather have the soap on a string and a lighter laptop!

I'm interested to see what the "brick" rumour is really all about!

New MBP

I'm still running on a 12" powerBook G4 here and i still love the teeny tinyness of it. It is however time for an upgrade, but everything I've seen to date has been such a small insignificant upgrade that i choose to wait.

I really hope that this Oct will bring something worth spending money on. We have heard rumors about new form factors, but is it really just going to be another aluminum body, but with "rounded edges" to make it look thinner! lets do something with new materials, or colours or something!

I don't fully understand the value in a glass touch pad. i like multi-touch and the value that has. i like what current laptops provide. but unless the glass pad has some kind of screen behind it, i don't get why i would want a piece of random glass in my laptop? can someone clarify?

What other rumours have we heard? because if the above is all we have to expect i think i will be once again underwhelmed!

glass touch pad

Sorry for my english, im not american.

One thing is multi-touch that is a function of the trackpad, and other thing is the material wich is made.
Some users has some issues with the current tackpad that wears away the material. Instead of a glass trackpad that will never disappear :-P.
So i think that if buy a glass trackpad, you will have multi-touch too.

The screen behind that you mean is like the toshiba notebooks, that are cool, but i think that is unnecesary, because on a notebook or macbook you have de "key function" that allow to do the same thing.

Glass pad

Well you don't need the glass track pad to have multi-touch. the new notebooks all have multi-touch already, not to the same extent as the iPhone, but again, it doesn't need to be glass to have that functionality.

I don't know what users press on their track-pads so hard that it wears out. I've never heard of this problem. I have had my 12" PowerBook for about 3 years now and I use it for both work and personal (so constant use all the time) and there is not even a mark on it to indicate it's wearing down!

I see glass as a disadvantage as it is more brittle to knocks and bumps.

When i say a screen, I mean that it would need to have a mini viewer of what you are looking at on the main screen, sorta like an iPhone screen as your track-pad. but this would be inefficient because it would cause you to look down at your track pad all the time. i could do with the multi-touch functionality of the iPhone, but the gestures would be based on where your cursor is on the screen.

Again - no need for glass!

I need a new MacBook ASAP!!

After 4 years of near 24/7/365 up time, the hard drive on my iBook G4 died and I am now forced to use my work Winblows laptop at home. It truly goes beyond suckiness. My iBook used to be my oasis of sanity against the Winblows world. Now I have no sanctuary.

I am very anxious to know what the new MacBooks will bring, though I don't know if I can wait another month to get one. I will have to physically restrain myself as I drive by the Apple Store!

New HD

if it's just your HD that died, why not just spend the $250 to get a new one installed? then you can keep your "oasis of sanity" until you are ready to upgrade, and even if you upgrade in October, you will then have two working computers to keep your sanity alive!
