Just like Canalys and Net Applications before it, the New York Times is reporting that iPhone global browser marketshare - as measured by Google - is through the roof. During Christmas (when nobody was at work!) iPhone browsing numbers even surpassed Symbian - which holds 63% of the world smartphone market - compared to the iPhone's 2%.
Acording to the Times, Yahoo is seeing similar trends. It should be noted that Google and Yahoo are less popular in Asia - where Symbian and Linux are more popular - than they are in the West.
After Christmas, when everybody headed back to work, Symbian regained its place at the head of the browser market share table. But as far as trends go, with Apple moving into Asia this year and its iPhone poplarity soaring (and perhaps new models at Macworld?), it isn't certain how long it can keep its lead.
As for now, the iPhone is the king of leisurely browsing - the kind one does at Christmas.
