One giant step closer to the Google Linux desktop

Google still isn't saying publicly that they're going to deploy Android as a desktop Linux, but HP, ASUS, and other major computer makers are apparently in talks with the company about deploying Android on netbooks

According to a Wall Street Journal report, Satjiv Chahil, a vice president in HP's PC division, declined to comment on whether the world's largest PC maker will sell either netbooks or smartphones running Android but confirmed that HP is "studying" the free operating system.

Woo-Hoo!

We already know that Android will work as a desktop operating system, because it's already been done. And, it was done not by some hackers whose second language is C++, but by a pair of journalists. If we can do it, anyone can do it. :-)

The usual response to the idea of a desktop Linux from Ubuntu, Novell or Red Hat or anyone else is a loud cry of 'nonsense,' from the Windows crowd. Android, however, is different.

I can tell you what the differences are between Ubuntu, openSUSE, Fedora and half-a-dozen other Linux desktop variants off the top of my head. Let's be real, though, no one except a Linux enthusiast could do that. Most PC users might know that Linux is another operating system, and they might know that Red Hat is a big Linux company and that Ubuntu is a popular version of Linux. That's it.

But, Google, Google is different. Anyone who uses a computer knows Google. Someone who might be reluctant to try a PC running anything except Windows, and Windows XP by choice, might very well be willing to give a Google-powered netbook a try. Come to think of it, I wouldn't be in the least bit surprised if there are some people out there who think they already are running Google on their desktops.

Think about it. How do they find things on the Web? They 'Google' for it. The company name has already become a common verb in English and other languages. How do many people check their mail? They use GMail. What they do they check for news? They use Google News.

Going from this to using a PC that actually runs Google isn't much of a jump at all. Sure it will be the Google Android Linux desktop underneath it, but most people won't care about that anymore than they care about the Google's search engine's Linux underpinnings. All they'll know is that their netbook or laptop is running something by a name they already know and trust. And, since these computers will be based on Linux, they'll cost less than their brothers running Windows.

Earlier this year, I suggested that 2009 would be the perfect year for Google to take Microsoft head-on on the desktop. With this news that serious PC vendors are already tinkering with setting up Android-based netbooks, I'm now predicting it will happen in 2009.

What People Are Saying

Google has a double pronged attack with Android and ChromeOS

Google most certainly is getting into operating systems, not so much as a commercial selling point, but as a way to leverage and channel systems and applications to their core sweet spots, and therefore build upon what they have already done.

I like the fact that Google is experimenting. They may hit a home run, chip a bunt single, foul to the catcher, or hit a long foul fly, but later straighten it out.

Google Chrome, the browser, is really fast, but other than speed, not particularly impressive. If, however, Google based browsers and Web based apps point to a complete array of Google services, then a highly Web based operating system that is very light and well optimized for Google Apps could, in fact, have a chance to succeed.

If such an effort further increases traffic to Google revenue producing sites, then it will have been worthwhile. IF Google's efforts further stir other vendors into exploring additional alternatives and try to come up with even better solutions, this could be really exciting, and that is what I am actually hoping for - a slew of new computing styles and methods in a space that has been relatively static for 20-30 years.

Yes, with Google android

Yes, with Google android linux will definitely take head on with Microsoft on desktop OS battle and this competition will be useful for normal users.

I can't wait to get away

I can't wait to get away from the greed of Gates and microsoft.
If at all possible I don't want to use any Microsoft product.

Mandriva - a perfect partner for Google

I think the Mandriva desktop is the closest to competete whith Windows.

It is fast looks great, ease of of use, stability - it is all there. Google why don't you buy them? I am 98% win -free thanks to Mandriva 2009.1. I am convinced that google can provide the 2 % software to make it 100 %.

Microsoft's over

The power of MS it's long gone.
If anyone has shares in Microsoft I would suggest they sell them asap, as when the OS wars engages on, it's gonna be messy and bloody, can't wait for Android on a PC...Linux forever...

It all comes back to - applications

Yes, google has some basic applications, however, if anyone is doing more than casual work they will demand the applications library they are used to.

Google powered laptops face the same issues as Linux powered laptops. Application Library.

While it may seem sacraligeous to say it in an Open Source forum, people are willing to pay for functionality. People are willing to put up with idiots in stores and are willing to buy those high margin insurance policies on their computers. (My son just bought a computer from Office Depot. $800. They wanted $260 for the extended warranty. No, he did not buy but most people are willing to shell out the cash)

People are willing to buy percieved security whether real or not. Purchasing software includes perceived security. Purchasing Windows includes perceived security (security as in blanket, not worm)

Just the way it is.

How can you be so happy with

How can you be so happy with this?

This is just one monopolist (Microsoft) being defeated by another monopolist (Google).

Only difference:ย now, there's our entire private/personal data at stake!

Google is known for wanting to know EVERYTHINGย about us. It's about profiling.

So please, wake up.

I don't like big corporations spying on me either.

That's why I've eliminated at least one of them, Microsoft.

Paranoid Much?

By definition, if Google takes a significant share of the OS market, it won't be an OS monopoly. There will be multiple options.

Google has it's market share due to user choice, not the objectionable tactics used by MS. You can still easily use any of the many other search engines out there.

As far as personal information--just don't provide it. The search still works and it's free.

User Choice?

Get real! How many things you download, click on,
even look at already have Google underpinnings? It
is not user choice, from tool bar to mapping software
to other areas of surfing. You have to make an
effort to avoid using Google, probably even more so
than to avoid Microsoft!

Since the Google CEO decided to become an Obama
lackey, it has been difficult to avoid using Google
for everything, so it is not a user choice.

Google is far more dangerous than Microsoft ever was
or could be in the future, because they know much more
about each of us than you may realize.
