Seeing Through Windows

One more reason Linux must fear Windows 7

In my last two blogs I've explained why I believe Windows 7 will kill Linux sales on netbooks. Here's yet one more reason: The return rate for Linux netbooks is at least four times as high for Linux machines as it is for XP ones for at least one netbook maker.

I've said in a previous blog that Windows 7 will kill Linux on netbooks because Windows 7 is lightweight enough to run on them. And as more evidence, I pointed to ASUS CEO Jerry Shen saying he plans to release Windows 7 netbooks in mid-2009.

Now here's even more evidence: MSI’s Director of U.S. Sales Andy Tung told Laptop Magazine that the return rate for Linux netbooks is at least four times as high as XP netbooks. MSI makes the well-received MSI Wind.

The reason? People find Linux too hard to use. Here's what he said:

Our internal research has shown that the return of netbooks is higher than regular notebooks, but the main cause of that is Linux. People would love to pay $299 or $399 but they don't know what they get until they open the box. They start playing around with Linux and start realizing that it's not what they are used to. They don't want to spend time to learn it so they bring it back to the store. The return rate is at least four times higher for Linux netbooks than Windows XP netbooks.

Windows 7 features a much slicker interface than Windows XP, is easier to use, and Microsoft will spend many millions of dollars to push its use on netbooks. So when it's released, expect Linux use on netbooks to drop.

What People Are Saying

linux users are less likely

linux users are less likely to switch to windows, and windows users will be more likely to switch to linux, because it is open-source. it is allways getting easier to use. and it is free. so in my opinion, the number of linux users will not drop, but it will increase as the linux distro's evolve.

Frankly, it's not that

Frankly, it's not that simple. You see, there are plenty of helpful people to run linux. However, it's not that simple as there are too many distributions to pick and it's really confusing as every distribution is competing each other.

Linux is too hard! HAH

Ok, while every person can't pick up a linux machine and go use ever aspect of it, it is not hard. The linux community is EXTREMELY helpful. Especially for us using Ubuntu, theres so many people out to help you, you will never get lost. Anything you need to do, especially basic things, are explained in detail in many places. People tell you exactly what to do/type. Linux is not too hard. Windows blows... end of story.

And..

Along with that... Linux is easier in many ways if you give it a chance. It's not complicated to learn either. An example of this is when you want to download and install something... You can type "apt-get install *" and it will find, download, and install the program for you. You don't even have to go find it yourself... For few programs, you do have to download and install it manually since it is not in the linux server.. which when you have to.. sucks cuz linux has you spoiled lol - either way, give Linux a try and I'm sure you'll see its good..

Oh well. Look at the IE

Oh well. Look at the IE market share, it dropped from more than 90% before to now below 70% since Firefox came out. And there was almost no Linux notebook pre-installed before to now there are couples. After years, you will see how wrong you are now.

Hope it doesnt Happen!!!

Though Windows is in the long run, the linux users are increasing rapidly. With the latest version of Ubuntu 8.10 being delivered to your house. Which is quite impossible with Microsoft linux will gradually become as famous with Microsoft?

Also the version of Ubuntu 8.10 being developed in mobiles. The competition will fall by either side.

This Preston guy

What an idiot!

Also, fear what? as a linux user, I know it is free and always will be, there is no company that may go bankrupt so I am unable to purchase it! so that I am also forced to buy Windows 7.

"People find Linux too hard

"People find Linux too hard to use"

This is NOT what he said. He said it was different.

My Dad

I installed Ubuntu on my 6o yr old fathers laptop and he had no issue getting on the net and doing stuff. In fact he likes it better because he doesnt need to worry about spyware, virus crap...etc.

Windows 7 to kill Linux?

UUUUUUUUUUUHHHHH! (Halloween music) I'm scared! ;-) NOT! I have invested in a number of Linux-related stocks: Wind River, Sourceforge, IBM, Red Hat, HP. Although a number of them have decreased in value, I'm holding on tight to them and even considering getting more now that they have gone down in price. The whole tech sector goes down from the climate of fear that's permeating the news. This has no bearing on the quality or lack of quality of Linux-related stocks.
