Patch up your Adobe

For a couple of weeks now cybercriminals have been quietly up to no good. Specifically, they’ve been “e-mailing PDF files with corrupted Flash video clips and hacking into websites to implant them. These clips, when activated, enable attackers to quickly install malicious programs on the user's computer.” I read that in Byron Acohido’s USA Today piece, “Hackers may slip through hole found in Adobe tools.” Affected are the Adobe flash video player and the Acrobat Reader.

Like all Adobe users, I regularly get update reminders from Adobe but I have to admit that I often ignore the prompt and put it off till next time. It wasn’t much comfort to learn that others often do the same. You can bet I’m paying attention now. With news of this vulnerability, you know I’ll be mindful, especially towards the end of this week; Adobe expects to roll out an emergency patch by Friday. I won’t be leaving holes in my system unpatched. For more details on how vulnerable you are to Flash zero day attacks, read this eye opening piece by Gregg Keizer!
