Pirate this Apple application and you’ll pay anyway

I hate to see new Trojans wherever they appear, but I find them especially disconcerting when they’re targeting Macs. I learned in Gregg Keizer’s Computerworld article that in this case the Trojan appears in pirated copies of Apple’s iWork ’09 application. There’s some solace in that the offending Trojan is hitting users who’ve taken the pirating approach. From a security standpoint, it’s dangerous enough when we use legitimate applications; the danger is compounded when you take a chance with pirated goods. This Trojan gets to work immediately as the user begins installing iWork, contacting the hacker(s) to report the compromise and await instruction. After that, your Mac could be subject to who knows what other malware. I know times are tough, but is it really worth saving $79 (the retail price for iWork ’09) if you’re going to subject your faithful Mac to hijacking by malicious users? Heck, Apple even offers a free 30-day trial version. If you find you really like it, spending the $79 will save you from the potential angst and regret of going with the pirated version.
