Recycle electronics free by mail

SANTA BARBARA, CALIF. -- Just when you thought technology was making "snail mail" obsolete, the U.S. Postal Service announces a vital new service that lets you recycle cell phones, iPods and other electronics -- as well as printer inkjet cartridges -- via mail. For free!

To use the "Mail Back" program, find one of the 1,500 post offices that offers special free envelopes. Drop in your recyclable electronics item, and mail it without postage. It goes to Clover Technologies Group, which recycles, remanufactures and remarkets inkjet cartridges, laser cartridges and small electronics.

Best of all, for those of us who live on the road, you can take as many "Mail Back" envelopes as you please, and use them to mail your electronics from anywhere. It's a great idea to tuck one into your carry-on laptop bag. When something dies on the road, you can drop it in the envelope and give it to your hotel's front desk to mail -- no need to carry the extra weight home.

Currently the program is a trial, and is focused on ten cities, including Washington, D.C., Chicago, Los Angeles and San Diego. If successful, it will go nationwide in the fall, according to the Postal Service.

Details here.

Ipod

I've been told at the Mac stores that you can bring in your old ipods, and they'll give you a 10% discount on a new one. I figure that's what I'll do when I'm ready to get a new one :)

Post Office proposed Recycling

So glad to hear this, especially inkjet cartridges. How about small batteries like AA, AAA, C, D or even smaller like watch and hearing aid cells?

Recycling batteries

I'm not sure where you live, but in the San Francisco Bay Area, the photo departments of most Walgreens Drug Stores will recycle them for you. If you live in an area where they don't have Walgreens, perhaps some other drugstore or photo store might be willing to recycle them?

You should be able to recycle small batteries at your local library or community center... also, check with your local senior center they may also have drop boxes to recycle them too!! Good luck

Isn't that nice that they will take this stuff for free?

This is all stuff that you can get paid for... you can even put empty printer cartridges on ebay and get cash for them. The same goes for old electronics.

A company REALLY concerned about the environment would pick up those old 15" CRT monitors for free.

It is great that they are doing this for free.

I am delighted that they are doing this. I have many recyclables which I don't want to throw out, but I don't know how to recycle them, nor do I have the time to research it item by item. Let those who have the time and energy and know-how do their own recycling and make what money they can, but I for one will be delighted to have this opportunity. You may not want this service, but there are plenty of others who do, and please don't spoil it for us with your negativity. I see some of the other responses have useful information, which I have taken note of. Thanks.
