Rogers receiving reduced iPhone shipments based on reduced demand

News around the web is that Apple is planning to reduce its iPhone shipments to Rogers, Canada's lone GSM/EDGE/HSDPA provider. The rationale is that Apple is punishing Rogers for its expensive pricing and three year commitment requirement.

Rogers only has a few days left to make adjustments to its pricing. Major Canadian media outlets (2) are encouraging Canadians to boycott the iPhone until Rogers comes out with competitive plans. Internet petitions are all over the place. About half of Digg's Apple stories of late have been related to Rogers iPhone backlash.

I am with the Canadians who think that Rogers' prices are outrageous but I really don't think Apple would punish its partner by reducing shipments. More likely, Apple is reducing its shipments based on the percieved lack of demand that these outrageous prices (and the public outcry because of it) will inflict.

Rogers has a week left. Will they drop their prices/requirements?

Update: Well they've given a very little..$30 for 6Gb.  Wow, stingy up there in the Great White North

What People Are Saying

I was profoundly

I was profoundly disappointed by the announced rated for the iPhone in Canada. As a former employee and previously a retail sales agent, I can say though that they emphasize more the so-called value of having the most reliable network, the coolest phones, big promotions, price plan flexibility and 'my home advantage' or 'better choice bundles' (their words, not mine).

It seems as though they think that such 'value' is an excuse to charge such outrageous rates.

I sincerely hope the iPhone has the side effect of causing rates to be more competitive.

One can hope...

... that Rogers/Fido will realize that paying customers are not an infinite resource to be abused.

I've been a Rogers customer for over 10 years, and have been somewhat satisfied with their service in that time. I'm also a Mac user/advocate/consultant and want an iPhone for myself and my wife. But if the people at Rogers think that I'm going to triple my monthly fees for the privilege of having an iPhone, they are mistaken. There is nothing about their iPhone plans that appeals to me. The prices are ridiculous, as is their 3 year term.

With the iPhone, Rogers has the opportunity to grab a large portion of the market from other carriers, if they price themselves into the market, not out of it.

Conversely, Telus and Bell both have some interesting promotions, and I'm without a contract right now, so the time is at hand to make a change. It is up to Rogers to determine if they wish to keep me as a customer.

And If I leave Rogers, I'm taking all of my business to other providers...

I venture to say you aren't alone..well maybe in your eloquence but not in your point.
