Rumor: Apple, Dell to ship ultraportables in January

LOS ANGELES, CALIF. -- The Taiwanese publication DigiTimes reported today that Kenmos Technology and Taiwan Nano Electro-Optical Technology are supplying electronics for new, unannounced Apple and Dell ultraportable laptops that may ship in January.

The parts include 13.3-inch LED notebook BLUs (backlight units) for Apple and 12.1-inch BLUs for Dell.

Apparently, Apple has ordered 80,000 units for December laptop production, and Dell has ordered 10,000.

The significance of the BLU part is that such electronics enable very slim display lids and very long battery life, indicating that Apple and Dell will be selling ultra-light ultraportables, which we here at TWIMO central applaud.

Note that this report should be considered rumor until confirmed by additional sources.
