Samsung unveils solar-powered cell phone

Samsung Electronics today rolled out a solar-powered cell phone called the "Blue Earth." The phone will be a touch-screen phone without physical buttons, like the iPhone. The solar panel is on the back of the handset.

The Blue Earth phone will be made from the plastic of recycled water bottles and contains no Brominated Flame Retardants, Beryllium or Phthalate, according to Samsung.

Even the packaging is politically correct, and made from recycled paper. The charger -- for when or where the sun doesn't shine -- uses only 0.03 watts on standby.

Here's the company's press release.

What People Are Saying

It's a really new and

It's a really new and awesome initiative.I think there is need of developing solar powered cell phones.I can save our time and also energy.

Solar powered cell phones

We all are using solar powered calculator last 15-20 years even solar powered car going throgh testing period, then why it taken such long time to build solar powered phones?.

I think this is a great

I think this is a great product that promotes environmentalism. Plus, it's cost efficient and saves company money. If they polish up on design work, I think this could be the next best thing.

Other companies such as

Other companies such as Motorola and Nokia should also learn something from Samsung and push towards Green Phones.

I just stumbled onto this

I just stumbled onto this very interesting article and think it is a great advancement. What never stops surprising me though is how rude people can be. What ever happened to common courtesy and people type things that they know they would never say to someone in person. Why is that?

A First Step Forward

I think this is a great step forward. Regardless of whether or not it is an effective product, Samsung should be congratulated for its efforts to try and move toward greener business practices and products. If nobody ever took baby steps like these, how could we expect to reach the end goal of a clean, green, and effective product? It is very rare (if ever) that someone develops the perfect product in one shot, no less one that boasts solar cells as a means of charging its battery.

No, it is not a new technology. Yes, it is a noble idea that requires more development. Nice work, Samsung.

Fantastic

Great idea by Samsung, I think this has to be something all smart phone manufacturers will have to adopt. Congratulations on being the leaders.

awesome! where can I buy one?

i think it's about time someone invented this. Personally, I'll buy one whenever it's available and will switch providers if I have to.

stupid.

where does your cell phone spend most of it's time?? your pocket, or a case..correct? and when you're talking on it, i don't suppose you hold the front of the phone? the back is covered by your hand. In concept it's a nice idea but samsung obviously didn't think this one over completely
