The World Is My Office

Satellite radio: the end is near

Just before Christmas, I wrote a controversial column called "10 things that won't survive the recession." Thing #10 was satellite radio, which dozens of readers disagreed with in passionate e-mails and comments. Now, it appears, the sole satellite radio company, Sirius XM, is about to file for bankruptcy.

Readers who subscribe to Sirius XM (I subscribe too, by the way) claim that satellite radio is just too wonderful to die, that somehow its sheer awesomeness will pull it through the hard times.

But the world doesn't work that way, unfortunately. The company was in dire trouble before the recession, and now the economic downturn will kill Sirius XM off and bury satellite radio forever.

In fact, even last year, the company's survival depended entirely on an enormous uptake in new subscribers. The company entered into 2009 with $3.4 billion of debt, some $300 million of which comes due on Tuesday. The company gets a huge percentage of its new subscribers from new-car buyers who choose the satellite radio option. Thanks to the recession, there has been an enormous drop in new car sales. And among those who are buying cars, a smaller percentage are choosing satellite subscriptions.

The bottom line is that there's simply no way Sirius XM can pay its bills. That's why, according to the New York Times, the company is preparing to file for Chapter 11.

What People Are Saying

XM Sirius pricing

I haven't read all the 99 previous comments but just wanted to let everyone know that I obtained a renewal on my annual XM Everything subscription for USD88.78 per radio by calling the cancelation department and asking to cancel. That's a saving of USD50 per radio compared with the cheapest "mostly music" subscription.

good article

Pretty much I have had the same experience as the above. I have been trying to figure out what Sirius is for a while now, as it has caused problems. I am glad it is being shut down.

I have just cancelled by

I have just cancelled by service with XM/Sirius. I have never had a service so mis-represented by a sales represented in my life!!

After an initial year of service I renewed (Allegedly at $142/yr) and added a second radio for my wife's car at (allegedly $92/yr).

Imagine my surprise when I received my credit card bill with charges of $175 and $133/yr respectively! The customer "care" representative told me the additional charges were taxes and "royalty" fees that were never mentioned.

My contact with the supervisor was not only unsatisfactory, but outrageous.

I have never dealt with a more misleading company. If it goes out of business in today's competitive marketplace so be it.

I like XM Sirus radio. For

I like XM Sirus radio. For the price, there is a lot of great entertainment and music. I for one, hope it does not go away.

Customer Service

Maybe Sirius XM would attract and keep subscribers if they did not raise their prices while eliminating services; revamp their customer service and update/streamline subscribers on line accounts. Consumers have multitudes of options for commercial free music without the frustrations of Sirius XM.

Sirius XM Shooting Feet in a Barrel

Oh, what dumb business people they are! Even those of us who like satellite radio are likely to run in despair -- now, we have to pay extra to get XM on line. Say WHAT?! I must have missed the announcement. Or maybe I skipped over the part that said "For merely another $16.99/month, you can now get what you got before for nothing." Look, if I didn't have radios I'm paying for in two cars, if this were the only one, OK. But, really, guys! At the end of this subscription period, I'm outahere.

i hope you like the customer service now

i hope you like the customer service now. because i do customer service for xm and ppl call in and ask me if i am from the states and if so what state am i from. as aug.02,2009 xm is moving all of their call centers over seas to india and places of that sort. i see so many accounts aday that are messed up because of lack of interest in the customer. all of these accounts have been managed by someone not in the states. and also they are taking lots of jobs out of this country and giving it to some non-caring forgiener that doesnt care if you want to cancel your service or get your package changed or change your contact info so your bill get s to you so you can make your pymt. so when you have a problem and you call xm customer service dont hang and try to get an american, because it won't happen as of august 2nd 2009

Satradio

It never fails to amaze me how many supertechno types can understand the latest in technology but nothing about common since business, It does not matter how well sat radio works, if nobody buys it, it will go away. Look at the pioneer of commercial sat communications, Western Union, who invested in state of the art sat tech in the late 70's but could not compete with transatlantic cables. Where is Western Union today? It does not exist, despite the fact that someone uses it's name to sell money orders and wire transfers.

Why do so many here have an

Why do so many here have an interest in wanting Satellite radio fail? My theory is that this is the NAB still trying to spread FUD (fear-uncertainty-doubt) about it because that is the only way they can fight it since they failed to block the merger.
