Seeing Through Windows

Security pro: Kill Safari browser now

With Apple still refusing to fix a big security hole in the Windows version of Safari, a security researcher has a simple fix: Stop using Safari -- now. He echoes what prominent anti-malware group StopBadware.org, and Microsoft have also urged. When will Apple take security seriously?

As I said in my blog two weeks ago, the security hole, a so-called "carpet bomb," could be used by Web sites to flood a PC or Mac with malware.

Even though security researchers and StopBadware.org have said Apple needs to fix the problem, Apple refuses to admit there's even a security hole, much less fix it.

Computerworld reports that Microsoft has weighed in, and has recommended that users stop using Safari until the problem is fixed.

Cynics may say Microsoft is doing this to cut down on Safari's market share. But that market share is negligible. And in addition, a security researcher agrees that users should simply stop using Safari. In his blog, Security researcher Aviv Raff notes that Apple refuses to fix the hole. He recommends:

The current best solution is to stop using Safari until Apple fixes their vulnerability.

This refusal to admit a problem, much less fix it, is one more example of Apple's arrogance. The company should put its tender corporate ego aside, fix the problem, and help users. Anything else is just plain wrong.
