Site5.com is undergoing a major DNS outage today that is affecting most of their customers. If a website you are trying to reach is down this morning, it might be the DNS servers at Site5 that are causing the issue.
They've been tweeting that the DNS servers (both of them?!) received a CentOS rpm update recently that caused some permission errors. Â

One really has to wonder why both of their DNS servers received the same update and are failing at the same time. Clearly this negates any of the advantages to having redundant DNS servers on site.Â
Customers using Site5 will have to wonder if this type of decision-making will continue and whether or not their websites can handle being offline in this manner.
Follow the Twitterstream of poor Administrators who have to sit and wait while Site5 tries to get their servers back up
Update (10:10am Eastern time). They say their servers are back up. However, most Site5 sites (including their own) are down because it will take awhile for the DNS changes to propagate.
Update: 10:30am Eastern time. Sites are starting to come back online now. Two hours after they started failing. That is a lot of money lost because someone forgot to check a update.
