Apple versus Google

Skype iPhone app is released and all hell breaks loose for FCC and AT&T

Skype has been on Windows Mobile/Windows CE since 2004. I remember trying it out a few years ago on a T-Mobile device here in the US.  It didn't seem like a big deal.  Perhaps because at that point there was only GPRS speeds for data and the application (and the OS) were so clunky, that the ten unintuitive steps I had to do to activate Skype made it too tedious.  It got uninstalled.

Fast forward a few years.  3G wireless data speeds are more than capable of carrying voice data.  Even high quality, better-than-landline SILK audio codec data is easy pickings for modern telco networks.  Add to that a smooth and intuitive user interface that Skype's iPhone application employs.  It also doesn't hurt that just about everyone I know is on Skype, including everyone I work with and even senior members of my family.

Skype just had over one million iPhone app downloads in two days.  That is over six downloads per second.  One out of every 30 iPhone and iPod touch owners downloaded it in the first two days.  Many more will follow.  Perhaps the enormousness of that feat and the fact that some developers were able to get Skype working over 3G on the 3.0 beta firmware and reported great results has the telcos worried.

block skypeAlready T-Mobile in Germany is fighting to keep Skype off of the iPhone.  Canada's least favorite ISP, Rogers, is doing the same.

Add to that the fact that the FCC is being pressured by the open-Internet advocacy group Free Press to make telcos Net neutral.  This means that they won't be able to block certain types of packets -- like Skype and video streaming (and Torrent traffic).   It also means that they will be unable to prevent Internet tethering to be done on phone devices.

This is what has the telcos worried.  A Skype experience that far surpasses that of what AT&T and the others have to offer.  Better call quality, better interface, more features, cheaper cost and more compatibility with other platforms both carrier (Wi-Fi, WiMAX, DSL, Cable, etc.) and operating system (Windows, Mac, Linux, Symbian, etc.).

About the only thing Skype can't do is call 911, which I imagine will be something that the telcos will put forward when they try to convince governments that they need to block Skype.

But it isn't just Skype.  There are many other VoIP players out there.  You'll have heard of Cisco and Vonage and probably Asterisk, but there are hundreds of other players operating on the SIP protocol.  Even Apple's iChat initiates voice and video using SIP.

If the FCC decides to open up the telcos, Apple might be able to release their super secret, fully functional iChat for iPhone application*.

How can the telcos win on this one?  I don't see a way out, VoIP is here to stay -- and it isn't blockable.  It isn't hard to route your VoIP traffic over Web ports or random ports that AT&T isn't looking for.  The current strategy of paying off lobbyists, which in turn, own a few government officials, will only work for so long.

My advice for the telcos?  Embrace the wireless ISP role that you are being forced into.  Three, the UK upstart, includes Skype on all of its smartphones.  While it may lose out on some revenue, it does get a loyal following that may not get ripped off on long distance charges, even if VoIP users will most likely suck up a lot more bandwidth.

How about a data only plan for the iPhone AT&T?  $60/month including tethering.  While it has to sound scary, it is the future.

Otherwise, I'll do it myself with a Cradlepoint.

*maybe I am making this up

What People Are Saying

Skype calls free on UK network Three

The British network operator Three (Hutchison 3G) have seemingly taken advantage of this furore and have now announced that Skype is free for all customers, including PAYG.

They've seemed pretty progressive, offering Skype for a long time, but as an additional monthly charge; now it's free for everyone regardless of tarif.

Nice one Three, I'm glad I'm a customer!

EMERGENCY CALLS

I pretty sure you can make emergency calls on iphone even without a sim card inside it, so who cares if you can't make emergency calls in the skype app.

Skype? NO WAY!

Search the internet for "Static Expected For EBay's Skype On The IPhone" By Ben Charny. You will see that there is another huge flaw in the Skype system, "Because the iPhone runs only one program at a time, using Skype on the iPhone means not using the iPhone for anything else".

Also, search the internet for "eBay Goes To Court To Hang On To Fabric Of Skype" By Patrick Smith. There, you will find that if Joltid wins it's licensing dispute against ebay Inc./Skype, it "could even kill the internet phone company in its current form"

"Skype would be adversely affected and the continued operation of Skype’s business as currently conducted would likely not be possible".

If you haven't kept up with ebay CEO, John Donahoe's, current activities you may not, yet know the massive damage he has already foisted upon ebay Incs. core operations. ebay marketplaces has lost over 50% of it's share value, while it's competitors, such as Amazon, continue showing profits. This trend has continued as Donahoe increasingly forces irrational and destructive policies upon users of the site. Search the internet for "Can eBay Win Back Sellers with a Shift in Focus?" and auctionbytes archives for comments from users to learn more. To read why Donahoe's own employees are angered at his leadership, go to glassdoor.com. To read more users comments, search the internet for (without quotation maarks): Ebay Stockholders and Sellers Calling For Immediate Termination of John. Youtube has a large number of informative videos on the horrendous business practices of ebay/paypal/skype. Please educate yourselves before getting tangled up in the ebay web!

Rogers Wireless clarification

I'm in the communications department at Rogers and want to clarify that Rogers Wireless is not blocking the Skype app for iPhone. If and when the app is launched in Canada, our customers will be able to use it. Rogers isn't involved in decisions about what apps are available for sale in the Canadian iTunes store - that's between Apple and the developers.

No Emergency Calls with Skype

Too bad Skype can't make emergency calls, which is one of the most important reasons to have a cell phone. No 911 on Skype. According to the website..."No emergency calls with Skype.
Skype is not a replacement for your ordinary telephone and can't be used for emergency calling." So this Data Only plan wouldn't work for most people.

Hey, $60/month including

Hey, $60/month including tethering doesn't cut it. Even free unlimited voice and data and free international calls doesn't cut it. What we want is free monthly service from AT&T, and maybe even free iPhone/iPod from Apple. Hey, they are big companies, and why shouldn't they give free stuff to us, a bunch poor little brainless americans.

Until this future arrives, no need to beg AT&T or pay for an expensive device from Apple. Just get FCC mobile for unlimited voice and data + UNTel for free international calls.

Yeah Right, Keep smokin that

Yeah Right, Keep smokin that Wacky Weed. If your waiting for free stuff from AT&T and Apple, you will be waiting for a LONG time.

$60/month including

$60/month including tethering doesn't cut it. What we want is free unlimited voice and data and free international calls.

Until this future arrives, no need to beg ATT or pay for an expansive device. Just Get Metro PCS or Boost mobile for unlimited voice and data + rebtel for free international calls

iPod Touch + skype + Clear spot = so long ATT

This is why we should all be supporting Clearwire and WiMAX. They announced a portable WiFi access point that is backhauled over WiMAX. Throw that in a bag, and you're a walking hotspot. Later ATT, my iPod Touch is all I need :)

gooddbye ATT? lol

Apple has sold about 17 million phones since the iPhone was released. Total worldwide mobile phone sales will be over 1 Billion this year. Apples sales are only a drop in the bucket. The iPhone w/skype posses no danger to ATT, that's just plain silly. Lots of mobile phones can use skype and have already been doing so for a ;long while. Wacky iPhone lovers need to get a grip on realty and realize it's not the only or even best phone around.
