If a Windows computer gets infected with malicious software, then the best thing you can do is restore the system to a recent disk image backup. This is, by far, the best option. Disk image backups also offer fallback protection from any and all software problems.

HD Tune is a free program that shows physical problems before they become fatal. Rootkits are best detected on another computer, a compromised copy of Windows is, well, compromised. Laptops and netbooks can present problems that desktops don't.
