Microsoft is betting that Windows 7 will succeed where Windows Vista failed. But there's one group of people who most likely won't like Windows 7 any more than they do Windows Vista --- Windows XP users. Here's why.

Windows 7 is already great. Windows 7 is going to run desktop Linux off netbooks and then the desktop itself. Lies, all lies, and we already have the proof.

Dear me. Just because I recently talked about Windows XP SP3's virtues and vices, some people seem to think I've turned away from my beloved Linux systems. Nope, I'm still a rock-solid Linux desktop user.

It's one thing to have a skunkworks operating system project, Midori, that could conceivably replace Windows. It's another to actually have plans on how to switch users from Windows to Midori. Guess what? Microsoft actually does have such plans.

I'm sure that Microsoft's change in heart was in part due to efforts like InfoWorld's Save XP efforts, which put names to over 200,000 users who don't want to move to Vista. I'm even surer though that what really changed Microsoft's mind is that Linux, and not Windows, was taking over the red-hot UMPC (Ultra Mobile PC) market.

Recently, my colleague James Turner reviewed openSUSE 11 and he liked it. It's hard to tell from some of the notes he got back -- shame on you people! -- but he really did. I, on the other hand, love openSUSE.

Pity me. I'm trying to update to Vista SP1 and it turns out I'm one of the people on the Vista SP1 banned driver list. I've wasted hours of my life that I won't get back, and still no SP1. I'll show you what I've gone through, including screenshots, so that you don't have to go through this mess yourself.

Microsoft has been promoting Vista's SP1 as a big performance booster compared to pre-SP1 Vista, particularly when copying files. But my preliminary tests show that Vista SP1 can be as much as 20% slower than pre-SP1 when it comes to copying files. And XP's copying speed leaves both in the dust.

The short answer is: nothing. And that's a problem, not only for large companies that are trying to make plans, but equally for Microsoft's credibility in the small-business and consumer markets.
