The world's worst way to market Linux

At first, it sounds like a good idea. Nanchang, the capital of China's eastern Jiangxi province, is requiring Internet cafe operators to replace pirated server software with legal copies of Red Flag Linux or Windows Server. What's not to like? It's estimated that China has an 82% software piracy rate. Getting businesses to go legal with a native Chinese Linux sounded like a win to me. Until, I saw the Red Flag Linux price tag: 5,000 yuan, that's $725 U.S. That's way over the line for a small Chinese business.

Nanchang has about 600 Internet cafes for its approximately 4-million citizens. In China, for most people, Internet cafes are still the way they use to connect with the Internet. China made be home for Lenovo and many other PC vendors, but you're not going to find PCs and broadband in most homes.

That said, no one's getting rich from the Internet cafes. They're small mom and pop businesses. They can't afford $725 for an operating system and they're letting the officials know about it. Unfortunately, it's not doing much good. One said, "When you talk to officials from the Culture Department, they tell you, 'If you're willing to pay, pay; if not, you have the option not to pay.' Hearing words like that turns your heart cold. We really can't make a living." In other words, you can either pay to play or you can go out of business.

Why not use another Linux? The local Culture Department, which is in charge of this new initiative, won't accept other Linux distributions. Nor, for that matter, it seems, will they believe Internet cafe owners who insist that they have legal copies of Windows.

This sounds to me like a straight-forward shakedown. I have no doubt that many of the cafes are using illegal software. That said, the government should be giving them the option of going with an affordable and legal Linux instead of insisting that they pay a premium price for a specific distribution.

Linux is a winning operating system because it's a great, affordable choice. Forcing it down people's throats at a high price is no way to win friends or make them want to do more with Linux.

What People Are Saying

The title of this article is

The title of this article is bizarre. 'Marketing Linux'? This is government regulation. Not. Marketing. For that matter, I don't quite see what's stopping an internet cafe from using some other form of Linux. Your article doesn't really say if this is prohibited or how this fits into the regulation.

Much ado about nothing

A guy could suspect that a lot of Windows people are posting to this topic. They are alarmed, of course, that Linux might displace Windows.

I can't possibly address the costs, or fees, associated with RedFlag, in China. I know that I downloaded and installed RedFlag absolutely free, and that it looks just like any other RedHat distro. No apparent back doors, no visible exploits, nada.

While I am NOT a Chinese, or a communist, I will say in their defense, that all the Western world has been bitching and moaning about piracy. Half the world has begged the Chinese government to put an end to piracy. Now that the government has moved to do so, in a meaningful way, all that those people can see is some kind of a conspiracy.

Blah. A Chinese Linux, no big deal. Forcing illegal copies of Windows out of circulation, no big deal. Educating people about Linux? That is a big deal, worthy of kudos to everyone involved.

It seems you completely

It seems you completely skipped the entire point of this article:

THE PRICE.

Most linux distros are completely free, but the Chinese government is forcing them to get one that is the equivalent of over 700 USD.

I absolutely concur with

I absolutely concur with this. It's the Microsoft policy in chinese way. There is just one difference - these steps are done be a legitimate government and Microsoft is just a commercial company. For example, the new advertisement campaign of Microsoft (BSA) is bordering with several crimes - threats people with fake raids in homes and approves that with cases that never happened. It's funny that many don't care about Microsoft but are outraged when chinese do a similar thing. It's a classical case of hypocrisy. I am still wondering why it took so long for China to realize the great power of software license fees. Chinese were always great at mimicking the western world.

The current local Chinese

The current local Chinese governments is not willing to be governments for the people, but mostly wishing to benefit from more tax, thus these officers combine themselves with some profit groups. And this is why so many small businesses in China can hardly grow, the vast majority's income can not grow with the same rate as China's GDP,and this is why the Chinese parents wish their children to go aboard and get better education there, and the greatest ones went to America!

Do you not "get it"?

Chinese are willing to slaughter their own children to assist counterfeit formula!

They aggressive poison tooth paste (antifreeze), pet food and milk products (melamine), fake Viagra (painted plaster pills), and of course software.

Question: If they'll murder their *CHILDREN* what makes you so special?

China = DEATH

Speaking of slaughtering children...

I read an article in Time a while back about how cops accompany doctors who bust into homes in the middle of the night to see to it that the state's abortion policy is carried out, even in the cases of pregnancies that are eight months along. I got halfway through it and had to stop.

The late-term enforcement process involves a long, long needle.

I think you misunderstand

I think you misunderstand it, $725 U.S is the price of Redflag Linux Server Edition incuding 2years service, the desktop edition is free!! Do you know how much does Red Hat Enterprise Linux cost? and Windows server 2003?

Facts just get in the way.

Facts just get in the way. $JVN isn't concerned with facts, just "sensational" headlines and misleading articles.
