Turkey and Russia looking to join iPhone union, at two carriers each

Earlier this morning news came in the the iPhone was probably going to be coming to Russia via two of its largest carriers.  Now Turkcell is making overtures for the iPhone in Turkey.

The iPhone is crossing cultural and political borders at a pretty significant clip if today's news is correct.  First, according to Vedomosti.ru, the iPhone is hitting Russia's number 2 and 3 carriers and we should expect an announcement within weeks:

OAO VimpelCom, Russia's second-largest mobile-phone company, and OAO MegaFon, the third-biggest, may sign a deal with Apple Inc. to start selling iPhones in the country this week.

As part of the agreement, Apple wants each operator to buy 1 million to 1.5 million iPhones, the newspaper said, citing unidentified people at the two companies.

Turkcell today also announced that it will be carrying the iPhone.  While Vodaphone has already announced that it will be carrying the iPhone in Turkey (at a later date), Turkcell is the largest carrier in Turkey and represents a much larger share of the Turkey (pot) pie with with 35.4 million customers.  (Sorry)

The jailbroken iPhone is already a hit inside of Turkey as you can see from the video below:

What People Are Saying

I hate to be picky, but it's

I hate to be picky, but it's Vodafone. NOT Vodaphone.

Come on guys its one of the world's largest companies and brands.

Screw Russia

When Russia quits acting like nuclear war is imminent because we want to DEFEND ourselves in a nearby region, then they can have the iphone. Until then, our phone, our rules.

Great...

I'm from Turkey and this news is absolutely fantastic for the millions and millions of Turkcell users here. Although, albeit Turkcell's largest share, I don't know how many people can actually afford and therefore will purchase the iphone. Then again, in usual terms, Turkish people invest in phones more than other essentials. So,my congrats to Turkcell...
