The downside of Apple having its own iPhone App Store

I've said it before, Apple's iPhone App Store is the technology innovation of the year. Apple has distributed over a billion applications over the service and now has over 50,000 applications to choose from. That is more than its creators probably ever dreamed of.

But it isn't all gravy. Here's why:

AT&T: Can its network take the next wave of iPhone 3GS?

AT&T has a monumental task. It, alone in the US market, must bear the brunt of the most widely-used 3G mobile device by a long shot. The latest figures show that the iPhone, out of the hundreds of mobile smartphones out there, is carrying close to 2/3 of all web traffic.

All on one network.

WWDC MacBook Pros have more than 3X battery life as originals

The big surprise coming out of Apple's 2009 Worldwide Developers Conference appears to be the new batteries in the MacBook Pros. Early testers are seeing that the new MBP's have a huge amount better power consumption than their predecessors.

Battery technology simply doesn't advance this fast.

Defending AT&T's $200 iPhone 3GS upgrade pricing

Let's get one thing straight before I defend AT&T. I think their service is horrible. In New York City and the surrounding area, there is no worse mobile carrier.

That being said, all of this pooh poohing about the iPhone 3GS upgrade pricing is just silly. Here's why.

Entourage for Exchange Web Services to take on Snow Leopard

Entourage for Exchange ServicesDuring yesterday's WWDC, Apple spent some time showcasing the new Exchange capabilities of Snow Leopard.  It got a lot of ooohhhs and ahhs because it has, out of the box, free of charge, most everything Mac users will need to connect to their company's Exchange 2007 Server.

Ironically, it seems to have more functionality than Microsoft's own Entourage 2008 product.

Egnyte Local Cloud moves the Cloud file server back into the office

A few months ago, I detailed an excellent "file server in the Cloud" application called Egnyte. In a nutshell, Egnyte is a secure Software as a Service that takes the place of your file server, FTP Server and backup. It also offers file versioning and collaboration beyond what you'd find in your everyday NAS product. This is great for small businesses who might have moved other aspects of their IT infrastructure to the cloud already (ie. messaging servers to Gmail) but still have to keep that server room running for their file server.

Not anymore...

WSJ: Steve Jobs returns in a few weeks ... or sooner?

The Wall Street Journal reported last night that Steve Jobs was well on his way to recovery and should return to work in late June, as scheduled.  Interestingly, Apple's directors have been in direct contact with his doctors to get first-hand accounts of his condition.  The Wall Street Journal spoke to someone who has seen Jobs in the past few weeks.

iPhone's Safari Browser to include Geolocation

I can't believe I missed this. Even worse, it looks like just about everyone did (OK, not everyone). I just checked a GPS-enabled webpage page, below, on a 3.0B5 iPhone's Mobile Safari and Boom! The webpage checks the GPS coordinates of the iPhone and returns a result.

Apple secretly updated 13-inch Unibody MacBook screens

If you've bought a 13-inch Unibody MacBook in the last few weeks, you might be in for a pleasant surprise. Apple has secretly updated the screens on recent MacBooks to a significantly higher quality. One very similar to, if not the exact same as, the more expensive MacBook Air.  The MacBooks in the Apple Stores haven't even been updated yet.
