Why is Google's AdSense doing the bidding of Scientology?

My Google AdSense seems to be infested with Scientology ads. I am not sure why but I can't get Google to remove them from my site. It's not a random ad, either. It seems like every single time an ad comes to my site from Google, it is Scientology.

I am not necessarily anti-Scientology. I don't mind the odd ad from a religion/cult/whatever group. Just like The Nation and Air America let Fox News advertise on their property, I am open to this. My site is an Apple site and Microsoft advertises often. I don't care, nether do my readers. If a group thinks my site is a good place to advertise, go for it.

It appears that Scientology is in the midst of a big advertising campaign.   They appear to want to advertise to my readers very much.

But this is outrageous. Scientology is every ad block 24 hours/day for over a week now. My readers have rightfully started complaining and I'd really like Google to stop. If they are paying Google an exorbitant amount to advertise, I am not seeing any difference in my CPM rates. So, I've tried just about everything in my power to get them removed.

Google being Google, they haven't made removing specific ads very easy. I've done the requisite posting on AdSense forums with strangely no answer. I've also researched competitive ad filters and put every Scientology URL in the filter. To no avail. The Scientology ads keep coming.

My other AdSense forum postings have been answered pretty quickly so I wonder why the Scientology removal is going unanswered for weeks. Other people have asked the same questions and are finding their responses unanswered by moderators. There is even an online petition to stop the ads.

I've also tried to call someone at Google. If you have ever tried this, you know that is a joke. I can't even get past reception. Way to serve the 99% of your revenue base!?!?

I don't want to get into conspiracy theories but Google also removed the Anonymous AdSense account. Anonymous was the group that was exposing some internal Scientology stuff (I don't follow this stuff too closely). Google also killed a Youtube account of an anti-Scientology crusader who was about to publish an expose on Scientology. They also removed Xenu.net, another anti-Scientology website's links.

I don't think Google is doing the work of Scientologists. I just think they are getting a lot of cash from them and don't want to deal with their litigation tactics.

But, you'd think that Google would be more friendly with their publishing partners. I may only serve up 3 million pageviews a month but they are practically begging/forcing me to go to one of their competitors.

And honestly, I don't care if there is an odd Scientology ad on my site. But this is ridiculous. What am I supposed to do?

What People Are Saying

well i don't really care

well i don't really care about scientology and i have no issues with them. cult, not cult, whatever. i'm just a guy with a site and what i want to know is, what's the deal with these ads? are they CPM or CPC? i know adsense is primarily cpc but advertisers can buy CPM as well. does anyone have a clue if these scientology ads are CPM or CPC? obviously people hate the crap out of them and won't be clicking on them, so i'm interested to know if they're making me money just by impressions or if they need to be clicked on cause obviously they have almost nothing to do with my site.

Google advertising Scientology in Europe

If you'r sitting in Europe (Austria that is...) and you look for your favourite lyrics on-line... you get either fat-reduction or Scientology on any website you try.
Whereas all adverts are in German, Scientology advertises in English. A bug in the Google ad-server, or lack of translation on the part of Scientology?

Block them

Yes, they are now hitting Europe big time.

It is possible to block/filter the ads, but it's not sufficient just to filter Scientology's main URLs (scientology.org and dianetics.org). For example some of the ads link directly to YouTube videos. you need to use Google's AdSense Preview tool. See here:

Clear your browser cache maybe?

I don't see any Scientology ads, but if i was you i wouldn't wanna see a single ad from them. They are nothing more than another group of extremists and we do not need to be helping them spread there hate.

to the poster who said we

to the poster who said we should be tolerant of scientology: you should read what scientology actually thinks about the world religions (that anyone who believes them does so because they were brainwashed into doing so trillions of years ago in an intergalactic movie theatre)

calling your organization a religion does not make it immune to criticism --and scientology only moved toward a religious slant for tax purposes

scientology is a militia/cult and i love 9to5mac but i do find the ads disturbing to see every day like seth said--i wouldn't mind them every once in a while, but it is very in your face to see them every day

re scientology scammers

guess what,im serious, you are probably being watched by scientology thugs and your home/friends and family are probably being watched too, this is the type of intimidating stuff they do,be careful of these ugly dangerous weirdos and con artists.

Stop Complaining- Cause you are definitely complaining

I come here from 9to5mac.com. I see a Dell ad, I don't go near it. It's personal preference. I don't post a comment to ask you to remove your links from 9to5mac.com.
Clearly whatever you did worked though as I don't see one scientology ad anywhere on your site. But it is religion, it is personal preference. Don't discriminate against your readers because you are intolerant: some with be with scientology, others muslim, some catholic etc.
Btw, I am not religious but I am not intolerant of other peoples beliefs.
Report on technology please, it's why readers come to your site.

Glad to see you raise this issue of AdSense the Scientology ads

Scientology always floods the internet with ads when their public relations are in a bad way. Over the last year, scientology has been in the media for the Anonymous movement, for former high level member defectors going public, along with multiple lawsuits accusing it and it's front groups like Narconon, of human and civil right abuses and financial fraud. Its as if the flood gates have been allowed to open as critics and the media have found the strength to take a stand and report the abuses and intimidations. This is a tough time for Scientology but for many, it's a sigh of relief to see the attention drawn to what has been known of and going on for many years. The Google ads are just an indicator of how bad things are for this cult.

So, this is why the increase in ads. Scientology policy dictates it.Goggle has allowed this spamming of websites all over the internet and as you state, because of the money and the possible fear of retribution by litigation. So, your writing this article is very important because you have expressed what so many have been reluctant to say while the frustration builds. Maybe now Gogle will listen. If not, and if the 'infestation' continues your suggestion to take your ad account somewhere else is going to be the route others will take.

Very well said, thank you.
