Seeing Through Windows

Why Microsoft fears Linux

I've been writing a series of blogs explaining that Linux has reason to fear Windows 7, because it may kill Linux's market share. But there's also plenty of reason for Microsoft to fear Linux, which is why Microsoft is looking to Windows 7 as a Linux-killer.

In my blogs, I've explained that Microsoft has made Windows 7 lean specifically so it can run on netbooks. As evidence, I've pointed to ASUS CEO Jerry Shen saying he plans to release versions of the Eee PC powered by Windows 7 in mid-2009. And I've pointed out the fact that the return rate for Linux netbooks is at least four times as high for Linux machines as it is for XP ones for at least one netbook maker.

What I didn't write about in detail, though, was why Microsoft felt it was so important to make Windows 7 lean in the first place: The skyrocketing growth of Linux on netbooks.

An article by Bloomberg does a great job of digging up statistics about Linux versus Windows on netbook, and it's sobering for Microsoft. It finds that:

Acer Inc. and Asustek Computer Inc., which together account for 90 percent of the netbook market, are using the rival Linux software on about 30 percent of their low-cost notebooks.

More disturbing still, the article says, is that

Netbooks will account for about a third of PC growth this year, according to Citigroup Inc. Shipments will climb at an annual average growth rate of 60 percent and reach 29 million units in 2010, compared with 18 percent growth for standard notebooks, according to a September BNP Paribas SA report.

Microsoft isn't just worried about ceding 30 percent of the netbook market to Linux. It's also worried that if people get used to Linux on netbooks, they'll consider buying Linux on desktop PCs. Here's what Dickie Chang, an analyst at research firm IDC in Taipei, told Bloomberg about that:

It's a real threat to Microsoft. It gives users a chance to see and try something new, showing them there is an alternative.

It's clear, then, that Microsoft sees Linux on netbooks not just as a niche market, but as a threat to Microsoft's desktop share as well.

That's why when Windows 7 is released, Microsoft will spend substantial amounts of marketing muscle pushing Windows 7 on netbooks. Expect it to go well beyond mere advertising. Expect price cuts and rebates for Windows 7 netbooks, special hardware on them, and more. All that money will eventually have an effect: Linux share of netbooks will go down, and Windows share will substantially increase.

What People Are Saying

interesting....

interesting post thanks!! Herpes Remedies

Another Open source supporter

Being a developer, Somehow I always supported Linux and I still love to edit files in vi editors. Though many people hate it. I am kind of all time concerned with the user friendliness Linux OS has.

I have used different flavors of Linux e.g. RedHAT, Fedora but still think these are not as user friendly as Windows is, I wrote about Linux browsers few days back read more here Linux Browsers : Where is user Friendliness???

The Issue

If the 3D games make it over to linux
then every operating system should fear it.

1st to be able to play that game is why
you baught that special video card.
Remember that 3d Chess game or your first 3D
Shooter game
Then
Games-Applications-Internet-networking
Became the Base.

Now most people go home and do 3 things...
play a computer game watch tv surf the net
when people can go home and do these 3 things
without worry of having to buy into serious
Computer Equipment then that system will rule
the world over...

The game that needs to be ported is the MMORPG
you do that and people all over the world that play them start using it ,because the word spreads...

Microsoft has to beef requirements because they fund Intel and Intel funds Microsoft
and all there fundamental round about companies
that fund each other..through MEDIA
That's the Problem

I made allot of money fixing windows systems
,and not really allot with Linux only hardware
Configuration errors or bad used hardware that's it.

I made allot of money because windows has so many problems and things that people can cause to go wrong ,and it itself can go wacky for many many reasons. People get hooked on problems thinking they eventually NEED them! because everyone has problems like this...it's just normal. = I'm tired of this Psycho Bable Crap.

Good Luck and Good Bye -> Windows 7
= Thank you Linux

Ok, I understand this "Linux

Ok, I understand this "Linux Killer" thing to an extent. From a pure market-share point of view and through those dorky glasses Bill Gates wears: Linux must go down! Honestly though, Linux is here to stay. It's community based, open source, free as in freedom, and free as in free beer. Which is to say that your going to have to kill Community, Freedom, and Beer. Not going to happen. No POS (which it may damn well be:) MS7 is going to kill anything except hardware.

PS: Bring on the price cuts. I'm just going to format that HD anyway...can you guess what's going on it?

Amen

I totally agree with, "PS: Bring on the price cuts. I'm just going to format that HD anyway...can you guess what's going on it?". Amen brother (or sister). Go ahead MS give me the rebates and discounts because I'm just going to format the hard drive and install the linux distro of my choice. Isn't that a beautiful word: Choice. And every time some one ask's me to fix their windows machine because of some virus os EBKAS (Error Between Keyboard And Seat) I'll recommend Ubuntu. As for their need to run the 3 or 4 windblows based apps that don't have a linux replacement I'll have them dual boot or better yet install Virtualbox and install tinyXP and setup shared folders. No more problems. I am pretty much a noob to the world of Linux and can't believe how simple it is to use, how flexible, the amount of community support, all the free open source software, and stability of the platform. I'm now a Linux evangelist preaching the good news! Amen

Linux is FREE you Dumbass.
Do you even have a clue about Linux?

You write a lot about Linux killer windows 7, I read it and I laugh. Its funnier than Jim Carey.

Rather than being a blogger, you should try stand up comedy.

welll actualy

I love how people ar saying things lik,e how does linux think it will get sucess! the point is linux isnt trying to do anything.

Linux is simply an alternative to windows, and a real good one too. every time i go to fix somones computer i usualy pop in a Linux live cd (slax is one of my favorits) and the same thing always happens...

"WOW! whats that?"

"Linux"

"THATS Linux?"

Most people dont even know what linux looks like, they are just taught by propoganda that its bad.

MY mom, my grandmother, father, sister, and of cource, my 5 year old and 2 year old nephew and niece can use guess what "LINUX".

I met a women at my job, she was tired of the confuson that viruses/spyware/adware, and hardware/software that made her computer do crazy things. so, she switched to linux, she said "It just does what i need, there arnt a thousand settings, or drivers, or crashes, it just lets me surf the web"

90% of the planet uses there computer for 3 things, web browsing, email, document editing.

ANY reputable linux distro is going to come with

Firefox (or another highly rated web browser)
Thunderbird/evolution/or another mail client.
Open Office / Koffice suite.

Gaim ( now pidgion ) - For aim/myspaceim/yahoo/gtalk/msn ect.

Gimp - for image editing (way better then paint)

Samba (so you can connect to windows networks)

and a slew of other pre-installed or packaged software titels to get the most out of your pc.

Personaly if your going to use linux, get with the google lifestyle, thunderbird can get your mail, calendars, news, and other feeds right from google.

Everyone knows Linux is FREE

Everyone knows Linux is FREE you Dumbass. Do you even have a clue that when you purchase a machine with Linux preinstalled, you're still BUYING a machine. That requires money.
I read your post and I laugh. It's slightly funnier than dead baby jokes. Rather than being a blogger, you should try to stop being a douchebag.

Good luck with that Windows 7 thing...

Say, good luck with that Linux-killing Windows 7 thing that'll be running on all the Netbooks real soon now:

No, seriously. Good luck with that. I mean it.

The 4X return rate only applies to the MSI Wind

The 4X return rate number is not for all netbooks, just for the MS Wind. Jerry Shen said that the linux and windows return rates for the eee pc are the same.
