The World Is My Office

Why you still need a landline phone

SANTA BARBARA, CALIF. -- It's 2008, and the landline phone should have been made obsolete by now. But thanks to wireless carriers like AT&T, Sprint, T-Mobile, Verizon and their ilk, cell phone service still isn't good enough or cheap enough to replace landline phones for most people

Nielsen reports today that more than 20 million U.S. households use cell phones only, and don't use a landline. The number is growing, and especially among lower-income families.

But that number represents just 17 percent of the total number of households in the country. Why on earth isn't the number 100% by now?

The reason: The wireless carriers.

I personally have a digital landline phone line. The reason I have it is that I make a lot of international calls, and it's cheaper than Skype. And Skype is far, far cheaper than international calls made on a cell phone.

Many cell phone users have correctly calculated that it's cheaper to have a landline phone than to make all calls by cell phone. The landline phone is seen by many as a way to drop down a notch or two in terms of the number of allowable minutes in the wireless plan.

Why do carriers accept this? They should figure out a way to make cell phone calls competitive. All they need to do is to make the additional minutes charge lower than the cost of using a landline phone.

Another reason is call quality. People don't have enough confidence in how they sound -- and the quality of what they hear -- via cell phones.

And, finally, people have decided that they can't rely on their cell phone carrier to always deliver service. So they hang on to their "obsolete" landlines.

Someday, landline phones won't exist in homes. That day should have been ten years ago. And it will happen only when carriers can match landline phones for price, quality and reliability.

Why do YOU still have a landline phone?

What People Are Saying

Why have a landline phone?

Great Information I agree.

Keep Landlines

I wholeheartedly support maintaining a landline for all residential homes. Unfortunately, it is a losing battle in Florida and the legislature is not on the side of consumers. I see it as a safety issue. Apparently, the legislature and governor view it as an issue to be decided by the telecommunications industry. While I could not be without

While I could not be without my cellphone, there ARE instances when you need a landline. Beyond the usual 911 type reasons, or costs.

Many applications for services require you to have a landline. I do Customer Service from home, which requires a dedicated landline for incoming calls.

From friends I have learned that if someone is on "home confinement" from jail they have to have a landline with no frills.

I am sure that if landline service is eventually phased out the above reasons will be taken care of somehow. But for now I will just live with cell and wired service...

Oh, I'd just like to add to

Oh, I'd just like to add to the foolish folks that don't want landlines phones that you need your cell phone with you at all times to hear it ringing. At least landlines ring all over the house and you don't have to run a mile to get to your phone...And for those who have to have it attached to your bodies while working at home, is that healthy? I heard that it's the trend for college students to go without a landline because they cannot afford one. Risky, but trendy. Students take more risks....but as we get older and wiser we learn there are so many healthy reasons to have landline phones available for safety reasons. Remember to have at least one that isn't cordless incase the power goes out...which then cells will die out too. Safe living!!!

landline can save your life

Come on, be smartest.
Seems that the trend of losing your landline Can KILL you or your loved ones. Yes, like good insurance here's me maybe saving your life;
1) If you are burglerized and attacked but can manage to dial 911, you don't need to hit send, talk or even tell your location. The police can find you just from that one call.
2) you are choking and cannot speak, but can quickly dial 911, help will come and maybe save you.
3)If you have a stroke and cannot speak and call 911, rescue workers will come and find you in your home.
4) If the police/sheriff's dept. are doing a blanket house to house call to warn you of danger in your neighborhood to be on the alert of, you need a landline for them to do so.
5) If there is a disaster at a nearby factory/nucleor energy plant and the authorities need to call your house to inform you of it, you will be sadly forgotten and maybe suffer or die.
6) Did you know if you cut both arms off you can still dial 911 with your tongue and they will come and stop the bleeding..ha
No, I don't work for any phone company. I just care that you have a darn phone to save my life if I come over to your house. Thank you!! Be smart and informed. Being cheap can KILL YOU> Get the cheapest service available if that's what bugs you. And make sure you have at least one old fashioned phone (not the cordless type) in case the power goes out...NOTHING ELSE will work...nope, not even your cell phone...BE SMART!!!!!

Because I mostly HATE cellphones!

Well, I guess I'm going to be the only one to say that my reason for having a land line, aside from the fact that they're superior, is that I HATE the whole idea behind cellphones. Well, the phones.. fine, so long as the person ACTUALLY needs one, but that's not really the idea behind them, is it? No! You just have to THINK you NEED one! That's what I don't like. What I don't like is that everyone must have one for no apparent reason! But did everyone own a hammer when they first came out?! Right! And I'm sure no one said anything dumb like "Oh but what about emergencies?! You need a good hammer in an emergency!". See how stupid that would have sounded?! Probably not. The stupid genie is out of the stupid bottle, as the saying goes, and now that everyone thinks they need one, they have one, and will just keep on having one no matter what! Too late to think and act like smart people! See? The genie is OUT of the bottle! OUT OF THE BOTTLE!!! WEEEEEEEE!!!!!

Cost-wise, I think this will

Cost-wise, I think this will improve with time, as more carriers are adopting unlimited plans.

The 2 main reasons for keeping a landline are 1) 911 advantages/for power outages and 2) call quality. my Tmobile cell phone quality just doesn't compete with a landline.

Power went out at my house for 3 days one time. Thank goodness we had a landline, and we could contact relatives and 911 when we needed it.
You need a landline phone though, connected directly through a jack, not a cordless phone, because that will go out.

Sometimes I need to call my

Sometimes I need to call my house and not necessarily a specific person. If the dog is outside and it begins to rain, I don't want to randomly call different family members until I find one at home. Or if someone wants to drop something off to my house, they need to know if someone is home, so they call my house.

Land line

Yes I keep my land line and here is why. I do not carry my cell phone 80 percent of the time. The 20 percent is when I am out on the road and may need emergency assistance or a friend needs to contact me in an emergency. I do not answer my cell phone if I do not recognize the person calling (although I do the same with a land line). I have used the cell phone once to call a business to find out where they are and that is about it. Cell phones are obnoxious devices and as far as I am concerned should be banned on any public transportation or airplane. NO I do not want to hear about your personal sex life while I am sitting next to (or close to) ANYONE.
I am also extremely worried that the jerks who think they can drive and talk need to be given a ticket. Of course I have seen motorcyclists using them talk about an accident waiting to happen. The laws might be in place but the police will not enforce the laws. Fire the politicians who can't get the police to do their job, enforcing laws.

Why I have a landline

Very easy. No dead spots or dead zones. When I call, no dropouts. When having a conversation, both parties can be heard clearly. It is amazing, when talking on the telephone with a landline cordless telephone, I can be heard throughout the house. If I use my cell phone, there could be a deadzone in any part of my house.
