Windows 7 beta blagged by BitTorrent bad boys

In Monday's IT Blogwatch, Richi Jennings watches bloggers watch the Windows 7 beta leak. Not to mention how to tell if your cat is plotting to kill you ...

Gregg Keizer dons his eye patch, arrr:

Windows 7 screenshotPirated copies of a Windows 7 build pegged by many as the beta Microsoft Corp. will release next month have leaked to the Internet ... A search on the Pirate Bay BitTorrent site, for example, returned two Windows 7 Build 7000 listings, both of which had been posted Friday.

As of Saturday afternoon, one torrent on Pirate Bay showed more than 1,800 "seeders" -- the term for a computer that has a complete copy of the torrent file -- and ... listed the beta build as a 2.44GB download.
...
Build 7000 is what Microsoft will issue next month as Windows 7 Beta, according to other reports by Windows bloggers.more

Zach Epstein reminds us why this is so important:

Of course everyone’s first impression is “wow, it looks like Vista,” but that isn’t necessarily a bad thing. Vista’s problems at this point after all, are most definitely not cosmetic; in fact many enjoy Vista’s clean lines and organization. Vista’s problem is still a bumpy launch and a stigma.

With Windows 7, Microsoft no doubt hopes to put the Vista folly behind it and the company really couldn’t be in a better position to do so - it most certainly shouldn’t have been hard for Microsoft to discover which elements people disliked most about Vista.

We can only hope that beyond building a quality OS, Microsoft pays attention to feedback from Windows 7 beta testers and general internet buzz during the beta process. If one thing can be learned from Vista, it is that the internet can be a merciless critic and literally destroy a product if enough complaints and ridicule are issued.more

Jason Chen whispers:

The beta expires July 1, 2009, and from what we read, it's a bit more stable than the versions people have been playing with for a few months.
...
You can get a copy on BitTorrent ... if you're OK with the fact that you're technically not supposed to have this just yet.more

Paul Thurrott is impressed:

Build 7000 ... is nothing more than a very finely tweaked version of the various post-M3 (Milestone 3, or build 6801) ... builds.
...
That's not a complaint per se ... Windows 7 simply isn't changing over time. And that says a lot about the state of Windows 7 development ... That is, Windows 7 is much further along now than was any other Windows version when it reached its first beta release. In fact, this build is much closer to a release candidate (RC) build than a beta from a quality standpoint.
...
And I must say, wow: Windows 7 isn't your father's Longhorn.more

Stephen Anderson gave it a whirl:

I have been using it all day today and I am loving it. All my hardware is working with it, as are the apps I want. I am liking the new GUI features, and it is faster to boot on my hardware. Large file transfers across local hard disks and across the network are improved significantly as well.more

But Locutus is as cynical as ever:

Too bad 2009 is going to be another year of hearing Microsoft lies and exaggerations regarding yet another Microsoft OS release. BFD, is what I say after 20 something years of the same junk year after year after year ... Though you may have smashed the OLPC and dashed their plans of helping millions of children, they kicked off a resurrection of the light weight small form-factor device you just can't compete on. IMO.more

John Biggs has a dream, brothers and sisters:

Mark my words, friends: Windows 7 will be Microsoft’s watershed OS. If it’s not, then MS in in serious trouble ... My dream? That W7 will be great enough for me to use on a daily basis. I’m out of the Windows habit but I’d love to be sucked back in with a good, strong showing from Microsoft.more
