Apple versus Google

YouTube goes black in China because of Tibetan Monk beatings

We all know the Great Firewall of China keeps an eye out for anything critical of the Chinese government. Though, one has to wonder how China's billion or so citizens like being blocked out of one of the most popular sites on the Internet -- for no explicable reason.

It isn't just youtube.com that is blocked. The billion or so websites with embedded YouTube videos also won't work for those inside China's government firewalls. That is a lot of Evolution of Dance videos going unwatched.

The Wall Street Journal quoted a spokesman for China's Foreign Ministry as saying the government had "taken up management of the [YouTube] network according to the laws."

According to the BBC:

Google said it noticed that traffic to China started slowing down on Monday and that by Tuesday morning, it was totally blocked.

When asked about YouTube at a news conference at the beginning of the week, a Chinese government spokesman said: "We encourage the active use of the internet but also manage the internet according to law."

A report published by China's official Xinhua news agency accused the Tibetan government of faking the wounds. No reference was made to YouTube.

firewall-of-china

I am sure some Chinese government propaganda is being spread around China to explain why the Google owned video site that shows skateboarding dogs and Brittany Spears apologists must be shut down for the sake of the country.

Or maybe China is trying to punish Google for not removing the videos at an earlier request. I'm not sure that YouTube is currently being effectively monetized so the grand total of the governments actions on Google might saving money on server bills.

We may never know what is going on behind the scenes.

But what about the Internet users in China? I really have to wonder how long the connected Chinese citizenry will put up with this type of behavior from their government. Certainly, they have to believe that they are mature enough to be exposed to whatever is out there and able to make their own decisions on what is right or wrong.

Maybe one of these times, they'll get sick of it.

It always seems like something silly starts a revolution ... a Teaparty in Boston, a Beer Putsch in Munich, the YouTube Ban in China?

Probably not.

I am not trying to get too high and mighty here. I don't live in with a perfect government either. We in the US aren't immune to government censorship. Wasn't there something about a ban on seeing soldiers casket's being brought home from the War in Iraq? Was our government trying to "protect us from the truth" or were they really trying to protect the dignity of the soldiers?

Small potatoes?

What People Are Saying

Free press

The Ban on photos of Soldiers dead bodies was lifted a while ago, old news. Public right to know vs privacy and respect for the soldiers and their families. The law was a matter of public debate held openly publicly and honestly, not a cover up. Public right to know won out.

In China it's whats good for the ruling party over whats good for everyone else.

I can't blame the Chinese people, after a lifetime of force fed Propaganda you can get people to believe even the silliest of things, like a sloe moving prop driven plane hitting a fighter jet.

The Youtube video on Tibet

The Youtube video on Tibet was stitched together with 1988 video, non-Chinese videos and some footages of 2008 pre-Olympic riot. Tibetan exiles are a bunch of profesional liars and losers who are delusional at best, criminal at worst. They are trying to turn Tibet region of China into an Asian version of Kosovo. These religious cult members are not going to succeed!

Nothing to see here, move on..

The previous post was approved by the communist party of China.

Communism, it's every where you don't want to be.

Watch out Computerworld , China may block you next!

Free access to info is

Free access to info is people's right to know the truth. Sensorship is misdirecting. Don't just blindly support the Chinese government. And don't just read Chinese version of history.

well, you US guys will only

well, you US guys will only believe these things against china. so, why should we listen to you? what's the meaning to argue with you if you never listen to us?

trust

Ok , Ill ask my Chinese roommate from college. You ask your American roommate.

It's my Chinese friends that I trust, the ones who have FREE access to information. Not the ones trapped behind the Great Firewall of China.

Chinas "free" press

China has no free press so we can't trust anything in the "official" media. Reading some of the ABSURD stuff printed by the Government of China to cover up their wrongdoings makes everything coming out of China suspect.

The foolish people who blindly support even the most blatant pro-China propaganda just reinforce these views.

Some of the press releases coming form China are very good, for their comic value.

What is China hiding?

It is interesting to see China go through a lot of effort to hide a short "fabricated video". With only China having full access to all the videos from last year's Tibetan uprising, I wonder what are they trying to hide?

The images will come out eventually and the current leaders should be tried for Crimes against humanity at that time.

Gyame Kyaktsar

China is hiding the sick way

China is hiding the sick way they have treated Tibetan People. If the think by blocking couple of videos they can hide how they treat people of tibet then they are wrong

China

The people of China do what the governmant of China tells them to do and they do not go against it. It is not allowed to do so.
That is the way it works - it is not America - it is China. If you don't like it and can't abide by it don't go there. Neither they nor anyone else is obligated to adopt the American way of life....why does anyone think that they are?
Why do we Americans buy everything from them and why do we send our jobs to them? Because there is no morality, integrity, nor ethics in our all consuming greed that is why. We support everything they do quite completely when it is monetarily favorable to us to do so.
