Apple versus Google

Zillow app: iPhone does real estate

I've been shopping for a house for the past 6 months.  Interest rates are low and home prices are dropping.  When I'm on the road searching, I've used the Trulia iPhone app for scouting out homes in the area.  It has a handy GPS feature which locates houses based on my location.  At home, I bypass Trulia for what I consider a better application, Zillow.

Zillow's database covers 88 million U.S homes which represents 95% of homes in the US.  It is adding cities in Canada.

Now I can use Zillow on the road as well.  As of earlier today, the Zillow App (Free iTunes link) became available on the iTunes App Store.

Zillow uses Microsoft's Virtual Earth technology while Trulia uses Google Maps.  Microsoft doesn't feel as quick to me as Google's mapping technology, especially when pinching and panning, although the results are nearly identical.  Zillow's iPhone app does lack a lot of the great tools that the full Zillow web site excels at.

You don't get the mortgage information, advice, directory or local info from the iPhone app either. Unfortunately, this puts the Zillow app in the same league as Trulia's.

The Zillow app does work great for finding homes around a GPS location.  Once you select a home, you can get the "Zestimate", prices, comparable sales and transaction history.   At the bottom it gives you the seller information with an easy to use click-to-call link.

Overall this is a great app but with many of the same features as Trulia.  I look forward to updates when this will incorporate many more of the desktop tools I love so much.
