Apple versus Google

Zune HD announced. Compares well to a (two year old) iPod Touch

I'm not sure exactly when it first happened but I now find myself feeling sorry for Microsoft on a somewhat regular basis.  Their search engine is going nowhere fast and they are having trouble holding onto market share in both operating systems and browsers.  Even the venerable  Microsoft Office is taking some hits from Google Apps and Zoho.

Today's release of the ZuneHD is another one of those moments.  We are coming up on two years after the release of the iPod touch.  Microsoft today unveiled a product that matches up with it.

First, let's look at the aesthetics.  It is bronze with hard creases on the outside and large, angular screws emanating from the back. It is thicker and looks heavier (but it might not be) than the first generation iPod touch.

Looks have never been Microsoft's strong point.  So perhaps it has some features under the hood that could impress.  Microsoft was short on specs but they did give out some noteworthy ones.

The screen dimensions are 480x272 pixels, which represents a 16:9 aspect ratio. That will be nice for miniature letterbox films.  The problem is that the resolution is almost 60 lines less than the iPod touch's 480x320 for other important things like web browsing, email, and even gaming.

The screen is an OLED variety which could help with battery life (requires no back-lighting) and even brightness/contrast. That trumps the first two generation iPods which use back-lit LCD screens.  The Zune will also have another feature that the iPod does not (yet) have:  HD radio.  This could be something interesting for a few, but I personally don't think it is worth changing platforms for.  Nor is it an exuse for missing out on all of the advantages that the iPod touch has.

The Zune will also be able to play HD content to an HDTV via a dock.  The iPod touch can only play SD videos via an expensive sync cable.   Again, this is all subjust to change in upcoming iPod announcements.

What does the iPod touch have going for it?  It is the most popular device of its kind, meaning there is a huge base of users as well a big accessories market already established.  It is also a smaller, rounded package.

The newer models continue to bring new features that the ZunHD doesn't have, including:

  • Bluetooth (enabled with 3.0 software)
  • A-GPS (GPS using wifi)
  • Camera and magnometer-compass (expected in 2009 version).
  • The App store with 40,000 apps.

Apple's offering also has great standard software including Mail.app and iTunes/iPod and Maps.  The Zune? It will have Windows Mobile Outlook and Mobile Explorer which aren't yet quite as good at Apple's offerings on mobile devices.

While I've been hoping for a while that the iPod touch would get some competition, I'm sorry to report that this isn't it.  I'm banking on the new Archos products.

What People Are Saying

I bet this fruit jumps off

I bet this fruit jumps off his couch and dances along to those gaytarded ipod commercials.

Did anyone even notice that

Did anyone even notice that it looks like a bad nock off of the original iPhone? God, you'd think that with all the Money MS has that it could hire decent designers....oh I forgot, they're all on Mac.

Bad Math

"...is almost 60 lines less..."

320-272 = 48

Amazing

We don't even know all the specs/features of the Zune HD, they won't be announced till E# most likely, and we have people telling us all about what it is and how it compares to an iPod Touch.

I would like to know where they got a Zune HD to do their comparison.

First signs of "crappy"...

Did anyone else notice in the picture above that the word "Marketplace" is cut off? MS released for promotion a picture displaying a defective UI... I would bet that that this poor planning runs deep in the ZuneHD. Will this one crash next leap year too?

Wait a minute

What you are saying may well be true. However, if you've seen any of the other interface design, cut-off text seems to run through the system. If you go over to Gizmodo (am I allowed to mention them here?) you can find a run-through of the UI and all of the headings are chopped off.
What I'm saying is that perhaps this really was an intentional graphic design decision.

Also, I think the version they have in their video is all black - it's pretty professional looking and sleek.

What!

Dude get off your high horse and get that apple out your butt. Jeez you sound like such a geek, that e on the end of marketplace got cut off!!! Actually I'm willing to bet that, that picture isn't even real. It may be a 3d rendering with the home screen layered over it. This didn't sound like a review or news about what is new with the zune, it sounded like a commercial for ipod. I love how he says that the zune hd can out put to hdtv and the ipod can only do sd and not hd (yet). I'm pretty sure it's a hardware limitation and not because apple went oh yeah lets turn hd on now. Jeez, if you bash it you've never had one or used one. can ipod share music over wifi? play hd to a tv? compatible with xbox? connect and sync with any number of windows pc? play recorded tv shows from windows media center? oh wait you don't use windows.

Go play with you crappy at&t service Iphone and ipod touches and make fart noises with your million apps that basically do what you can do on the internet enabled device. Oh yeah can your phone play flash? mine can, and it's Windows Mobile!

Smells the same

The "features" are a step up to the plate based on current available hardware and relative prices (OLEDs for instance were not feasible at this price point last year). However, like Seth discussed the biggest differentiator is the software. And if you've seen the Zune software you can attest that it doesn't hold a candle to iPhone OS in terms of usability and experience. iPhone OS 3.0 promises a lot of improvements and new software features which we've seen demoed. The fact that MS is willing to show a product shot without a software demo means that they are hiding something or that the software is as junk as its always been. Given that Windows Mobile 6.5 isn't expected until later this year and the Zune is built on the same platform I'm expecting it to be junk like always.

I'm probably what you'd call an Apple enthusiast. Just remember there's a reason for it.

Zune playing catchup.

Reminds me of Linux Desktop supposedly playing catch up to Windows.

Wonder just how far that analogy will go.

Is the Linux Desktop now a better experience than Windows, just not as popular? Personally I prefer not having to worry about a system getting mucked up with crud.

Will the Zune experience finally surpase Apple, but by then be so far out on the fringe that it won't matter?

Will the Zune never catch up to Apple?

Only time will tell.

I think this new Zune is a

I think this new Zune is a fine piece of industrial design and not a copy of vintage Braun's gadgets like iPod or iPhone. I would give it a try without bashing over it first. This blog is trash. Who reads you anyways?
